Cot bumpers

Hi,

Looking for some suggestions, my dd is 7 months old and has been sleeping in her big girl cot for a month now instead of her next to me crib.

We didn't buy a cot bumper as they are not recommended and she has a clear cot, however she is waking herself up almost hourly bumping into the sides of the cot as she likes to roll around!

Can anyone suggest anything safe/ other than a cot bumper that might stop dd from waking herself up?

Thanks 😊

Is she in a sleeping bag? I find they help wigglers a bit

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 27/01/2021 11:52

Honestly? My son did this. He just learnt not too. He 10 months old now, still does it sometimes but way less than before.

The quilt advice is just making your own cot bumper but an even riskier version Confused

There are a different type of bumper which goes around the individual bars, that would allow for more airflow and negate the strangulation risk but I don't think they have been studied to see whether they really reduce risk or not. I would probably look into it and make a decision.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2021 12:07

Like this one, couldn't think what they were called.

Please dont do the quilt idea above.

Time is one of the few cures for this. DS still wriggles in his bed, and can often be found at very strange angles, but hasnt fallen out for several years. She just needs to learn how big the space is.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 27/01/2021 12:08

Tuck a quilt tight down the side and hang it right over the clear sideof the cot so when she bashes she's hitting the quilt not the side

Absolutely dont do this. The quilt could suffocate the baby if they're a wriggler and get tangled in it.

SpamIAm · 27/01/2021 12:08

Could stick her in a travel cot if you have one?

mintich · 27/01/2021 12:09

Do not follow that quilt advice!

I wouldn't change anything, they do learn to stop bumping the side. A sleeping bag may help if you arent using one already

Hardchoices · 27/01/2021 12:11

There are safe breathable mesh type cot bumpers you can buy. I actually pushed one right into my face to check I could still breath and I could. Do not do the quilt suggestion.

candlemasbells · 27/01/2021 12:12

A travel cot is a good suggestion. I think to a certain extent you just have to live with it. I couldn’t so used a travel cot

Megan2018 · 27/01/2021 12:12

Leave well alone, they learn to stop doing this eventually. Anything attached to the cot is very dangerous.

ShalomToYouJackie · 27/01/2021 12:48

This is even more dangerous than a cot bumper ffs

DO NOT DO THIS.

Honestly, that's incredibly dangerous.

Megzmoo · 27/01/2021 14:57

Thank you for all the advice.

Just to confirm I absolutely will not do they quilt thing!

The travel cot is quite a good idea, not sure I would be able to use my sensor monitor with it thought 🤔

I may leave it a few more weeks and see how she gets on, how long did it take for your little ones to grow out of it?

She sleeps in a sleeping bag and has just started crawling so seems to be sleep crawling at night 😂

Oh god I remember that phase. It lasted about a month I think before the novalty of being able to crawl wore off. Then he learnt to pull himself up and the phase started again....

Keiki · 27/01/2021 15:25

I too used a breathable mesh cot bumper as mine seemed inclined to stick arms and legs out then wail about it.

Amrythings · 27/01/2021 15:37

Mine is 19 months and still at it. Since we took the side off he crashes into the bars less, but is found complaining sadly in his sleep with his bum hanging over the edge a lot more.

He gets it from his dad and I really should have thought more about reproducing with the world's most restless sleeper!

Dogsandbabies · 27/01/2021 16:41

We have the breathable mesh bumpers. And like the poster above I really tried it on me to make sure I could breathe. My DS does still occasionally bump but doesn't wake up.

Megan2018 · 27/01/2021 17:21

The breathable cot bumpers have caused death from strangulation and entanglement, (not suffocation) and injury from using them to climb up. They are unsafe and are sold for decorative purposes only. They should be banned full stop.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2021 17:26

The mesh ones surely wouldn't solve the problem of bumped heads, anyway.

lemorella · 27/01/2021 18:51

I had the same issue and bought cotton bumpers from Amazon. I made sure that I could breath through them myself. The ties are short and on the outside of the bars so absolutely safe. Dc is in a sleeping bag so can't climb and even if they could, the cotton would just squish down. There was two in a pack but I decided to only put them at one end of the crib which made me feel better. They are tightly tucked into the mattress with a flat cotton sheet on top.

I was very very hesitant about it at first but dc was waking up multiple times a night by bashing his head on the rails.

peetieswie · 27/01/2021 19:43

I bought breathable mesh sides that velcro on to the sides so no ties. Have been good so far. I got mine on amazon (although I don't like using them due to the way they treat delivery drivers)

Nervousdave · 31/01/2021 23:03

We have a couple of little toy comforters (ones a jelly cat bunny with attached little blanket, ones a different brand) i always pop these next to the bars, if hes crawling around he will find one and cuddle it before hitting his head/face off the bars.
Comforters like this are considered safe for sleep, as long as there are no loose eyes etc, or long fur x
