Potty training advice please!

Tried to potty train my 3 yo a few times before now. This attempt is going better, as in she knows when she needs a wee or poo and will tell us, but will then be reluctant to sit on her potty/the loo or not sit for long enough and then keep going back and forth, whatever we do to try and keep her on her potty (books, bubbles etc) She gets it on the potty sometimes but has lots of accidents too - we're eight days in now. Just looking for opinions! Is this normal? Is she not ready or is this more behavioural? We started potty training again because she asked us and didn't want to wear nappies anymore.

@Bourbonbiccy it's true she's doing really well with those things. Much better attempt than previous times. I looked it up and the author of Oh Crap has a video on 'fear of release' and I think it could be that. So trying the tips she's suggested. DD won't really tell me what it is she doesn't like about doing wees on the potty so yes will have to keep reassuring her.

@snarfblaff that is kind of my gut feeling but I also want to give her a good shot at it. I think it is just this fear that is holding her back. Will see how the next week or so goes.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but have you thought about going straight to the toilet rather than a potty because she’s a bit older?

Something like this works really well so they can take themselves.

@Toddlerandtwinstobe we do have one like that as well, but just seen how much more comfortable that one looks compared to ours! might invest! padded seat might help!

I agree with continuing as she sounds like she is well on her way, and stopping and starting when she is starting to master it, is not very fair. Putting her back in nappies, I think would be cruel after all her hard work.

If it hasn't clicked into place within a day or so then the child isn't ready.
A day or so ? Do you do that with the alphabet or counting or do you help them understand and accept its a learning process.

Try getting her to blow bubble or vrrrmmm like a car, there are ways that her body will be encouraged to wee, it just sounds like a little uncertainty of releasing her wee, keep your chin up @Pantheon, you both sound like you are doing well to this point.

I agree as she is a bit older, a comfy toilet seat might help FlowersFlowers

@Pantheon

Thanks everyone. *@Snarfblaff* We've been doing pretty much the same thing. She doesn't nap anymore so only has a nappy on overnight. Poos she seems to get and they are always in the potty. Wees are hit and miss because she doesn't sit long enough or says she needs to go but then won't sit down. I think we'll give it a few more days and then leave it for a month like you say. I think I'm feeling the pressure now that she's 3 and all her friends are potty trained, but that's about me and not fair on her!
I hear you on this, my DS just turned 3, and I am feeling stressed, as there is a lot of pressure and I am doing it all on my own. I keep saying I will make a start and then don't, then don't know how to start, do I just get up one day and say right here you go?! Not an excuse but always so many things to do, and keep putting it off.

Nursery told me they expect to be toilet trained(made me feel worse) but then said they will help.

My DS is in with me as we moved in the last couple of months, so I'm not being funny but with a crappy machine as furnished place, very little storage and drying space, I don't want my DS sleeping in my bed and having accidents, so I would be inclined to stick a pull up on at night, but then I do get why it is better not to. The other issue I have is a very small and cold bathroom, not really space for DS to sit on the potty and so it would be giving him a seat for the toilet.

One person suggested pull ups but taking them/asking if they want to go to toilet every hour, first thing when up and after meals/drinks etc, that makes sense, I guess with the use of pull ups though, it would just make it take longer maybe?!

Nice idea, I have seen them, but I'm thinking of all the toilets I've had up until now, and most wouldn't allow for this to fit, i.e toilet right next to wall/corner area. My bathroom now, when you open the door you would be on top of it!

😵 So jealous now 😀 that's great! I have only just commented on your post and so you will see I haven't even started yet with my DS 🤦‍♀️😬

Hi @Redruby2020, I stressed about dd but she got there and your ds will too! Is he showing any signs of being ready? I'd definitely go for some kind of seat for the toilet as the potty is too small for dd really to be comfortable. She is not potty trained for nights as I think that will come later.

Hey, that's great to hear, yes lol after rubbishing it because I thought it won't fit, I have gone ahead and ordered the toilet trainer seat with steps, that another poster suggested, so will see how we go. I am not sure about signs, I think if we'd persevered last year he would of cracked it, but we weren't in our own place etc had a lot going on. So now is the time to start giving it a go.
