What furniture in nursery/childs bedroom

Hi all, I am 13 weeks pregnant with our first baby, which is very exciting, but also feeling quite clueless about certain things! I'm aware baby will sleep in with us for probably the first 6-12 months, so with regards to the nursery/baby's room, what will we actually need or do in there?

We have just started doing up one of the spare rooms as the nursery and are going to get all new furniture. There would be room theoretically to fit a double bed as well as the crib, changing table, drawers etc. But is a single actually better/more useful when they get to the appropriate age to move out of a crib? (I don't even know what age that would be!!)

What furniture is realistically useful or necessary in a nursery?

A single (or toddler size) will produce much less laundry and give floor area for playing.

DD had a cot-bed which, because she turned out petite, lasted until she was 6.

Somewhere for books.

We have a tiny nursery (box room) for our 3 month old and currently have a changing table with draws where we store his clothes, another tall storage unit with boxes and a nuna leaf rocker. There's a bookshelf attached to the wall and a big storage box on the floor. Storage, storage, storage basically. When he moves into his own room we'll remove the nuna leaf and put a cot in there. Changing table and storage are all you need 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oh yeah and a laundry basket and a bin!

I think we just had a chest of drawers.

You won’t want to put a baby in a double bed from the crib.

A comfy chair for you if you have to sit in there soothing or reading stories or whatever.

We wanted to maximise floor space for playing (and for sharing the room with sibling later) so got a toddler bed after the cot. Next step will probably be one of those extendable IKEA beds Smile

Good points. From what you are all saying if I have a good crib bed I won't need to put any bed in there for a good while... it also gives me room for a nice comfy chair which is a really good idea, thanks! As well a laundry basket, bookshelf etc

DD1 has the small room so she had cot, bookcase, armchair and chest of drawers with changing mat on. Since 2.5 she's been in a single bed so the cot went in the loft and the chair in our spare room.

Oh you’re calling the cot a crib. I thought you meant a smaller thing. Never mind.
But yes, get a cot or cot bed and then a single or toddler bed.
