What do you do to entertain a 10 month old?

We're stuck in doors today (and probably tomorrow) because of rain. We usually get out for a nice long walk everyday, which I find helps break up the day in between naps and meals.

Please give me some fun activities to do with my 10 month old?

Scribbling with crayons, treasure box of safe items to explore, singing, reading, long bath, let them pull all the clothes out of a drawer, let them rampage through the house while you follow and keep them away from dangerous things!

Sit them in a cardboard box/on a rug and slide them around on the kitchen floor!
Bounce balloons around - biffing some with their head!
Build a tunnel for them to crawl through/hide in
Stick post-it notes on them (and on you) and see if they can grab them off.
Stack things for them to knock over!
Hide small objects under upturned cups/pots/boxes
Set up a small ramp (from a plank of wood or some old guttering) and roll things down it.
Put objects like socks and scarves into a tissue box for them to pull out.

Brilliant ideas, thank you both!

If you have a bottom kitchen drawer, put only Tupperware, wooden spoons, spatula, maybe a light flat pan, beakers, plastic plates. When you are doing jobs in kitchen you / they can crawl along to open it and get everything out and make a noisy mess!

There's a Nifty video on Facebook where a mum has filled some ziplock bags with water, glitter and some plastic small stars. She taped them down on a table and let the baby play with it. Apparently it's good for development.

I put a little pebble in an empty coffee can and shook it and my LO thought it was great. We also play on the bath with bath toys and that keeps them busy for a while.

My LO loves their books and we have different types so they don't get bored. I'd agree with pp with balloons. They provided 2 weeks of entertainment for mine.

I basically spend all day trying to stop him touching radiators/plug sockets/coals from the gas fire/door hinges.

You could create some sensory (and noisy) toys e.g. Rice/pasta/coloured water in clear plastic bottles, messy play- make some jelly adding a few small (age appropriate) toys, cornflour mixed with water is a good play but very messy, when it drys up a bit a paintbrush and water in the garden keeps them entertained for ages. Water play- bowl of water and add some fruits cuts into appropriate sizes, could also add food colouring.

They love water play at that age. Stick a swim nappy on and sit them in an empty bath with a bowl of warm water and some toys. One day it can be plain water, the next time add some food colouring, the next time have bubbles..... you can also give them a couple of cups with different coloured water in and a big bowl so they can do mixing. Bath pipes are great - they have suckers so you can stick them on the side of the bath for your kid to pour stuff through. If you want more ideas, you can freeze some little toys in ice cubes and give your kid warm water to pour over them to “rescue”them. Basically there’s a tonne of water play/messy play ideas out there’s and by doing them in the bath in just a nappy you have virtually no clear up time! Obviously be careful of bath getting slippy - we had one of those plastic bath mat thingies.

Seconding balloons. We got a cheap pop up ball pond and chang3 what was in it each day - balls all one colour one day, mixture of different colours next day, all different sizes and textures another day, balloons... just keep mixing it up.

Mine absolutely loved mixing things. Mashing up weetabix was. An absolute winner. Made it into something afterwards if I could be bothered!

Sensory bottles can be fun, but might be more effort than they’re worth as you can’t tell in advance what your kid will like. BasicLly old plastic bottles. Tricolour pasta in one, rice in another (you can dye it with food dye if you like), coloured sequins, coloured beads.. each one makes a different noise. Make sure you glue the lid on so there’s no choking hazard. My DD used to shove them and roll them across the floor or I’d try to get her to shake them to music. You can do liquid ones with glycerol etc to make layers, but although they looked pretty they took effort to make and DD didn’t like them as much.

Do some dancing if your DC isn’t too heavy to easily hold. If they can bear most of their weight on their legs hold them firmly and encourage them to boogie to music. Or just dance around them when they sit on the floor. Get a disco light or projector if you really want to go wild Grin

Some of these ideas require small amount of prep so won’t help you today, but there’s plenty of damp days coming up!

Hahaha, glad I'm not the only one! And my LO knows exactly in which cupboard the child proofing has failed so delivery can't come soon enough! They are like magnet to dangerous things!

To be honest, as much as we do try and get out every day for fresh air, we do seem to be having so much more fun indoors. LO loves crawling, standing, climbing and gets really fussy in the buggy unless we head out for nap time when he just falls asleep. What do you guys do outside? Would love some suggestions. We do car / tree / animal spot but LO just wants to come out after about 15-20 minutes ( I rather avoid the play grounds at the moment).

Indoors we build a soft floor area out of big, soft cushions next to the sofa, he loves climbing up and jumping down endlessly! Balloons are definitely a great idea and so is Tupperware...my LO just absolutely loves packing / stacking, so anything will do! We listen to music / sing a lot too which is especially very helpful during meal times when again, he gets fussy having to sit down for more than 5 minutes.

I love the Crayon and messy play suggestions, will definitely give that a go as it would mix our days up and give LO something different to try out Smile
