Why not just use your normal bath and then buy a bath sponge or sling to go in it to support the baby? I did buy a baby bath and used it once before starting in the bigger bath with a sling thing - wish I hadn't bought the bath at all after that!

Dickers · 26/10/2004 12:35

Don't bother to buy one.
Use a washing up bowl for the first few baths (once a week is plenty) then buy one of the baby bath supports and use it in your own bath. They are great, you will gave 2 free hands and no stupid great big bath to store!

We didn't even buy a sling - just a bath mat to make bath feel less cold and slippy. Didn't put in much water obviously and always had dd lying back onto my arm. Worked fine.

Borrowed one for ds but didn't use it much and didn't have one at all for dd. We had a foam support (Mothercare?) which we used by taking them into the bath with us to begin with and then to lie them on in about an inch of water until they learnt to sit. Tummy Tubs (the bucket you've seen I think) are supposed to be good because they can adopt the foetal position and may soothe colicky tummies but they would get quickly outgrown.

baby bath was a waste of money - used the big baby bath sponges. Although the baby bath makes a great drinks cooler for parties in the summer

PicadillyCircus · 26/10/2004 12:38

I'd recommend using a bath support in the bath as well - DS HATED having a bath until he was about 3 months and the faffing around with the baby bath was a hassle that just ended up with a screaming baby! We did some bathing in the sink as well.

Blackduck · 26/10/2004 12:39

used a washing bowl for many months (ds small..) and then a bath that went across ours -why can't you have one like that?

joanneg · 26/10/2004 12:39

sana - had a bucket bath - ds hated it. In the end I would bring him in the bath with me and he loved it!

Chuffed · 26/10/2004 12:43

baby bath was a waste of money. Buy a bath support instead and use it in the big bath. I also used to get in the bath with dd sit with my legs straight and dd would lie on my legs quite comfortably in the water.

prufrock · 26/10/2004 12:46

Definately do not buy a bath. We had the floating bath spport which was very good, and softer for the baby than the hard plastic ones. But the best way to bath a baby is for you or dh to go in with it.

jane313 · 26/10/2004 12:53

I got one that rested on the side of the big bath that was much better for my bad back. We used it for 9 months and he was alwys a 91st percentike baby. Now we use it for outdoor water play. We got it from mothercare.

zubb · 26/10/2004 12:58

we had a bucket bath and both ds1 and ds2 loved it. I felt more confident using it than when I tried a more traditional baby bath, but didn't try the support.

If you've never bathed a baby before, trying to hold one in a big bath is a bit scary. Esp if you have a very nigh sided one like I have. For DD1 I used her baby bath (faff though it was) for quite a while. With DD2 I was more confident and by 5 weeks, I had ditched the baby bath and was using the plastic moulded support (Bloomingmarvellous.co.uk I think?) which I think is the finest invention ever! I tried a cloth and a sponge one, but the baby kept slipping down.

Baby baths are cheap, and they can always be sold, put in garage, passed on (or used as drinks coolers!) Get the one from mothercare that has a nice sloping end.

However, that said - I have bathed my babies in sinks and washing up bowls too when not at home!

Skate · 26/10/2004 13:03

Haven't used my baby bath much. Used it briefly for ds1, hardly ever for ds2.

Actually, I use it more now for ds3 simply because I bath him at the same time as ds1 and ds2 but don't feel I can dunk him in with them as they are very boisterous and splash a lot and ds3 is only 8 weeks old.

I would spend as little as possible if you buy one as you may not use it much.

Also, the thermometer things for the water (and for bedrooms for that matter) are a waste of time. Just use your own judgement - its' not rocket science!!!

Skate · 26/10/2004 13:04

I have also bathed in sinks when not at home and it's actually easier because a sink is a more comfortable level to be holding them at!!

Blackduck · 26/10/2004 13:05

my babybath was 3.50 from mothercare - now use it to put the clean laundry in, or as drinks cooler....

SANA · 27/10/2004 16:43

Okay I am going to go have a look at the baby bath supports, I had not even considered going in the bath with the baby and had not even considered using the sink but it makes sense!!

I used the sink, much easier

KBear · 27/10/2004 17:13

I had an inflatable Tomy bath which was very good - supports your arm when you are holding the baby. Great if you travel with the baby too. It was used as a dollies bath for many years too!! Mothercare sell them. £10 I think.

clary · 28/10/2004 11:50

we had a tummy tub it was expensive (£15??) but very good for those first few months (till about 4mo or so). Really quietned all three of mine as soon as they went in it as they are up to their neck in warm water (unlike any ordinary baby bath) and it's like beign in the womb again. I would say it was well worth it and you can always sell it on afterwards.
Got it from the horpital btw.
