How do you get your nappies white?

In the summer i found the sun naturally bleached my nappies white, but now i seem to be getting stains. Can anyone suggest a way of getting these out?

I normally wash with ecover.

just leave them anywhere sunny - windowsill wherever.

Probably not v ecological, but I spray poo-stains with squirty Vanish before I put them in the nappy bucket. They always look clean by the time I've done a preliminary rinse in the washing machine and then I can wash them with other laundry at 40 degrees (she says, to justify the dodgy Vanish)

I read on a thread recently that hanging them outside on a frosty moonlit night helps.

Not sure if this was a Halloween inspired wind up or not but might be worth a try. .

They are for poo-ing in though ....so I dont get too wound up about it.

ecover does not have optical brightners (aka bleach) in it so wont make whites white in the same way many laundry products do...

(given that they dont contain optical brighteners there will also be no optical brightners to bind to your babies skin which is obviously a good thing!)

If you really want white whites you could add ecover whitener ... still hang them on the line cause there is still a bit of UV in the sun to bleach the nappies a bit but obviosuly not as much as in the summer!

I squirt poo with Vanish and wash in normal persil non-bio like the rest of the laundry

sun is the stuff though...

nannyL · 27/10/2007 18:28

if you use persil nonbio powder then it will whiten the nappies!

(if you use non bio liquid then it wont as like ecover it contains no optical brightners)

I know, nannyl
was merely describing the stain-fighting regime in use chez badger

Frost is great for whitening too.

horsemadgal · 27/10/2007 21:08

And a week of rain apparantly!

krugerparkrules · 29/10/2007 15:58

Ecover does a bleach-type product (powder which you can soak with or add to wash) but of course you can't find it at most run-of-the-mill supermarkets. It only comes in a smallish packet & probably would not be that economic for nappies so only worth trying if you are a die-hard Ecover fan.

a woman i got chatting to in a baby clothes shop in brighton t'uther week swore by eco-texor bio-tex or something to get her nappies nice and white.

i have taken recently to power-jetting most of the poo off of nappies before drypailing them and i reckon that keeps stains down too (as well as keeping vast quantities of crap out of my machine, happily) this is coz there is a v powerful spray attached to the bath taps and i use it to get the bulk of poo off the nappies into bucket which i then tip down the loo (spray wont reach the bog, sadly)

but the little bugger has taken it upon himself to toilet train himself so i guess my fluffy days are numbered. ho hum.

Soak them in Milton - works fabulously! Even 10 minutes soaking works. Instructions say use half capful in sink of water, but I use much more if it's a stubborn stain.

toomanyballs · 11/11/2007 09:42

The ecover stuff is laundry bleach. I don't have have nappies that need washing but it has kept my DS's white school polo shirts brilliant white all summer ( no poo but other equally ground in stains!!). Its the only thing that i have found that works well just by adding to the wash. Don't have to use too much in a wash and lasts me quite a while.

I don't know for sure if it works, as I'm still 4 weeks away from becoming a mum, but the woman at the Free Trade shop where I bought my terry nappies told me to hold the nappy tightly in one hand and to flush the loo on them. Then to place in a bucket of cold water with a few drops of tea tree oil. She said the tea tree oil works as a disinfectant, but also helps loosen the stains.

Like I said, not too sure if it works, but it's what I'm planning on doing.
