Newborn won't settle/sleep

My baby is 11 days old and the past couple of evenings just won't settle down!

During the day he's perfectly fine drinking formula and having cuddles and napping but come 6pm it's like a switch flips and he won't stop crying! Tried cuddles, feeding, changing, etc but nothing works!

Any tips/ideas welcome?!

They have day & night mixed up for a long time! Just keep trying, do whatever works (let him sleep on you, maybe). it's still very early days. Good luck.

It was really common among the babies in my NCT group. Daughter certainly did it. Keeping her upright in a sling helped a bit, but mostly we just bore with it until she grew out of it - a couple of months, I think.

Do you have support? Can you take turns?

Yep, seems normal. Had the exact same thing with DS & spent many a sleepless night in the first few weeks googling to find out it is very common! Newborns have absolutely no concept of night & day, so don't play ball when we're thinking it's bedtime now.

I used to sit up with baby from about 9pm until 5am/6am whilst DP slept. He would then come & relieve me whilst I slept. This tag team lasted for a few months but it worked for us.

If I was lucky, the baby would sleep a little so I would get a bonus catnap to help me last until 6am.

Then as time went on, baby would sleep longer stints & only wake to be fed so we eventually could all spend the night in the same room. Just get through it together as best you can, you will get there!!

Perfectly normal - my DD2 kicks off anytime from 4pm, I make dinner and do DD1s bedtime routine with her in a sling most nights as it's the only way I can attempt to settle her and get anything done. It does get better as they work out day & night and "bedtime" starts to move earlier
