9 month old still feeding at night

Does your 9 month old still feed in the night?

My Daughter goes to bed at around 6/7 and has 6oz milk. She then wakes about 10, 2 & 5 and polishes off 6oz every time.

From my googling, a lot of people seem to say that they don't need it at 9 months and that it's just for comfort etc, but would she be guzzling down that much if she wasn't hungry?

She's is a normal sized 9 month old and she feeds well in the day. I attempt 3 proper meals a day and she also has snacks in between. She also has probably around 18 ounces in the day.

normal for breast fed, not that that's much help xxx

Yes it’s completely normal but she should never be draining a full bottle - if she is it means you need to offer her more milk.

Snacks are not normally recommended until after 12 months.

Mine is still feeding once per night most nights at 16 months (good eater), but we are BF so it’s largely comfort when teething etc. I’ve no experience of FF but imagine it’s similar.

BingBongToTheMoon · 12/01/2021 12:18

That’s a lot of stuff to be filling a 9 month old with in 24 hours.
I would stop the snacks, they’re absolutely not needed.

My dd still fed at 9 months, but by 10/11 months though it was more waking out of habit inthink as she'd have maybe 1 or 2 ounces which to me wasn't hunger so we went cold turkey and took it off her, harsh I know but it was hell for one night then she just stopped waking up for milk almost like she realised she wasn't going to get any so why bother. Xx

I’m not sure why mumsnet says no snacks when last week my health visitor told me that my 10 month old should have 3 meals and 2 snacks and that’s not changed since my DD was weaned 3 years ago.
I think that’s a lot to be drinking in the night; one bottle seems fine but 3 is a lot. I’d be trying to up what she has in the day instead.

And the point is that between 9-12 months formula should be decreased in favour of food so of course snacks are needed otherwise they’ll be hungry

mynameiscalypso · 12/01/2021 16:26

My 17 month old still feeds in the night - normally around 6/7oz of full fat milk. Sometimes it's as early as 11pm, sometimes as late as 5am. He also has a bottle before bed at 7pm. It's a pain but I don't really get people who criticise saying they're just 'feeding for comfort' because, well, yeah. It's not nice to feel hungry. If I wake up in the middle of the night hungry or thirsty, I do something about it.

My formula fed 9 month old has just started asking for niggt feeds again. Yay.

Try introducing a later feed (maybe split the feed?) so that baby has a bottle around 10.30/11pm. This is just a pick up and feed, my baby was often still asleep so was super easy to then put back into the cot.

If nighttime feeding continues, I'd suggest slowly decreasing, dilluting the feed or just giving water. Babies get used to feeding at certain times including at night but if on solids, really does not need that amount at night.

My DC (teen now) slept through the night from 4 months (with a late evening 'sleep feed') but then through the night once (protein) solids were fully introduced, probably around 6 months? But babies are different.

Good luck!

Don’t worry, my son is 13 months old and is still having two night feeds He was a formula fed baby - on cows milk now. He’s happy and healthy. I don’t think there’s any right and wrong.. all babies are different.

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/01/2021 17:33

How much does she weigh?

Caspianberg · 12/01/2021 18:02

My 8 month old still feeding overnight. Feeds 8pm bedtime, wakes and feeds 11am, 3am, 5am.. he eats 3 decent meals a day now and has 4+ daytime feeds as well

bob1985 · 12/01/2021 18:17

My DD was still having 2 night feeds at 9 months...dropped to 1 about 11 months then started going through the night about 14 months.

3 meals and 2 snacks as standard most days.

If they are happy, eating ok during the day growing well I say roll with it.

I got a look of pressure to 'wean' her at night. Many said she would never sleep through, but she has pretty consistently since 14 months.

1980sMum · 13/01/2021 09:22

I think the key thing is, if you and baby are happy, that's fine but waking in the night can be exhausting for the mum (parents) so you have to weigh that up. There is always a way around these things but never feel pressurised either way.

Good luck!

newmum234 · 13/01/2021 09:34

My eight month old DS has about 800ml of formula a day plus two meals (soon to be three) and no feeds at night. He sleeps from about 7pm-6.30am. I really hope he doesn’t start needing night feeds again as I’d assumed we were past that stage!

2Cats3Kids · 13/01/2021 10:51

Totally normal, I'm afraid. Mine woke every few hours until they were weaned at 15 months. They are now 3 and 5, and they still wake regularly during the night for a drink of water and/or a wee. Luckily they're easier to settle/settle themselves now, however!
