Going out with 1yr old who refuses hat and gloves

Struggling with this atm! Any advice appreciated!

Keen to get out for daily walk with 1yr old so we're not stuck inside both going crazy. He's not yet walking so in pushchair. Only problem is it's freezing cold outside and he goes beserk/immediately pulls off any form of hat or gloves. This means that he gets extremely cold very fast and even more angry!

Starting to get pretty desperate as walking him has been my only form of exercise/headspace for a long time, and it would be nice to stay out for more than 20 minutes.

How about fingerless gloves and hoods instead of hats. It could be the glove material they don't like so have you tried different sorts. you could give him a big comfy blanket to have in his pram and a hot water bottle underneath to keep him warm

Llamapolice · 10/01/2021 17:07

I have a tie on hat, it's a battle to get it on but once it's on it's done. Not solved the glove problem though!

I'd go with heat pad/hot water bottle (not too hot obviously) inside a cosy toes with and a good coat/ski suit. With the rain over on top.

No gloves/hat will be fine then.

I'm in a similar situation, DS hates hats and gloves but will wear a hood as pp suggested.
With his hands, do you have a cover/blanket for his pram? You can tuck his hands into the blanket to keep them warm, ds occasionally pulls his hands out but it isn't long until he's tucked them back in.

Do you have a rain cover for the pram you can put on?

bravefox · 10/01/2021 17:16

Thanks everyone for the replies. He's in a big snowsuit with hood and buggy has a nice fluffy footmuff. I think it's his fingers which are the problem but he keeps pulling them out and waving them around! I just wish he'd understand this is what makes them so cold!

Will give hot water bottle a go and fingerless gloves sounds like a good idea @1950s1 .

Thanks again!

When I've got a glove refusing baby, I get a pair of fluffy, adult sized socks and put them on their arms, right up to their arm pits, then put their coat on top. They are pretty much impossible to pull off - it annoys them a bit at first, then they seem to forget about it when they realise that their hands are warm. Might be worth a try?

MrFlibblesEyes · 10/01/2021 17:17

I've just sewed some mittens into the sleeves of ds (14 months) snowsuit so that he can't remove them 😁 I've left a little gap so that I can manoeuvre his thumbs in properly and it seems to be working well so far... It seems to be helping with the hat issue as well as the hat is harder to remove with gloves! Or it could be that he got so cold removing his hat the other day that he's finally learnt his lesson!

viques · 10/01/2021 17:19

Are you using proper gloves with fingers or mittens? I think mittens would be more comfortable for little fingers, less constricting, and also easier to put on. Remember to thread them through on a bit of elastic in case they get thrown out of the buggy!

ChooChooCho · 10/01/2021 17:20

This type of hat was brilliant for my DD, who wouldn't tolerate any hood or hat! (Hope picture loads - it's balaclava style from Google images)

Plus gloves that are thinner not padded, with thumbs not full mittens so she could still use her hands

Buy a fleecy jumper in a size too big and just pull the sleeves over his hands. Or wellie socks pulled up to the elbow with his coat over the top

Topseyt · 10/01/2021 17:32

I had to use coats with hoods because all three of mine were hopeless with hats and always pulled them off within seconds. They couldn't do that with a hood as they tended to try and pull down over their faces.in order to remove it, so the good stayed up.

I never fully solved the glove problem, but just kept a blanket in the pushchair. I found them generally more accepting of me tucking it around them if they had already begun to get a little cold, even though that may sound awful. It was only for a few minutes and then they would stop squalling.

Topseyt · 10/01/2021 17:34

The hood stayed up. Bloody autocorrect!!

FippertyGibbett · 10/01/2021 17:38

Put the rain cover down and a blanket around his legs, the pull the blanket over his hands if he falls asleep.

NoliteTeBastardesCarborundorum · 10/01/2021 22:50

This was us last year. My DS would refuse gloves then infuriatingly start crying and holding up his hands because they were cold. However, I did have some success getting him to wear socks on his hand or my gloves. I think it's a sensory thing. This year he still won't wear mittens but will wear finger gloves.

TrinityWaves · 10/01/2021 22:56

A bonnet type hat is harder for them to pull off.

For gloves look on Amazon at 'ScratchSleeves' or mittens with long sleeves? I've used both!
