Babychange with 2 in tow - is it actually possible?

So, I can't fit my buggy in the toilet/babychange room and I have a 2 year old and a 3 mth old in nappies needing a change, what do I do?

I could leave my 2 year old to mess around in the toilets whilst I change the baby, but then where do I put the baby when I come to change the 2 year old?

I only ask because I had to improvise and use my portable change mat on a rug in the library the other day - and some old biddy complained and a member of staff came to tell me off!

sorry, no advice to give really but I know where you are coming from on this one.

Who designs these change facilites???arrgrghhhhhh . I can't go shopping to my nearest big town without a helper as the only mother and baby change facility with a toilet does not have enough room to fit even a very small stroller so you have to leave the pushchair outside with all your shopping in it and take your children into the tiny cubicle with you (you can't fit shopping children and you into the cubicle as it is so tiny).

The only suggestion I can think of is to take a sling of some sort with you for when you have to change your oldest one but I'm not sure how easy it would be to change a nappy with another one strapped to you.

btw, I would have had a few choice words to say in the library if I were you .....but then I think people forget very quickly what it was like being out and about with a little one so I suppose you have to let them off

Did you ask the library staff member where you were supposed to change the baby's nappy?
I would probably either have left the buggy outside the toilet/babychange and taken the toddler and baby in, or asked a member of the library staff where was available to change nappies.

yep, but then where do you put the baby while you are changing the toddler...gosh, this parenting lark is complicated!

Good point I'm sure I must have had to do this at some point having 3 aged 2y7m and under but I can't remember what I did. Good suggestion about having a sling with you. I have changed a toddler's nappy with a baby in the sling with my later children. It's awkward but it's possible.

going to have 3 under the age of 4 next year so I think I'm goin gto have to invest in a sling (and read up on threads like this one) - all mums should be given an extra pair of arms on the nhs!!

I have the same problem as you and end up changing nappies all over the place. Nobody has had a go so far and it's not your fault that accessible facilities aren't available.

Have muddled through so far with changing them outside (in summer), planning trips around places with good facilities, changing in the pram for the baby and stood up for the toddler in a quiet corner.

WasherChainSaurusMassacre · 26/10/2007 21:26

When the library lady came to tell me off, she said it wasn't nice to change nappies on the rug because it was for children to play on. I pointed out that the baby was actually on a change mat, not the rug, but she still thought it wasn't nice (FFS hundreds of people have probably walked across that rug in their filthy shoes anyway)

I explained my predicament about not being able to take both boys into the toilets as no where to put the baby, and she said she realised it is difficult and that they would have sorted something out.....Like what I wonder?

I have actually had to do a standing up change on my 2 year old today in a cafe toilet - thankfully he hadn't pooed, that would have been hideous

tbh, i ain't leaving my pram to be nicked, it comes in wiuth me! Usually disabled toilets have a babychange but if not i change dd on floor in disabled (keep a changing mat with me at all times for this purpose!) so i have room to take pram, and odd occasion neice and nephew in too!

nappyzone · 26/10/2007 21:29

oooo sounds a nightmare - i generally have changed my little one in the pram/ buggy and prayed he didnt shat all over his buggy mid change as then i would have been in a right pickle!

WasherChainSaurusMassacre · 26/10/2007 21:32

Change them in my lovely P&T buggy - no way! . Although it didn't even cross my mind TBH. I was so tired and weary already I just wanted to get it over and done with as quickly and easily as possible.

No buggy (not even my Maclaren Volo) will fit into the disabled loo or the other toilets at the library, so I HAVE to leave it outside anyway, I'm used to having to do this so doesn't really bother me that much now (am sure it will when my buggy gets pinched though)
