Hey wise mumsnetters,

My friend has just had a new baby, she now has 3 under 3 so has everything she needs so said just to get her a card, but I'd like to make her up a hamper of "essentials". I don't have any children myself yet but have thought of the following, any suggestions to add?

  • Water Wipes
  • Nappy sacks
  • Calpol
  • Sensitive baby bath
  • Plain white sleepsuits
  • Small teething toy

(I haven't included nappies as I understand some people find a certain brand/fit and just stick with that)

THANKS!

I think that's a lovely idea, maybe a small comfort toy, new muslins or some yellow metanium (magic stuff).

20viona · 07/01/2021 08:40

Muslins for sure and I'd pop some facemasks and chocs in for mum.

WhenTwoBecomeThree · 07/01/2021 08:43

Metanium nappy cream! Could you get something like a Just Eat (or similar) gift card or something for when she's had the baby?

Honestly she will have all those things already. She will have more than enough clothes, she will either not use baby wash or use the same stuff as the others, calpol can’t be used for the first few months and with young children she will have it. Her house will be overflowing will all the stuff you have listed. Please listen to your friend, she wouldn’t want more baby stuff to sort and store. Maybe buy her a posh shower gel or cake.

Thatwentbadly · 07/01/2021 09:02

Or make her dinner.

These aren’t essentials, but nice bits for a hamper:
Pukka motherkind tea www.pukkaherbs.com/uk/en/products/organic-teas/motherkind-baby.html
Bloom and Blossom The Very Hungry Caterpillar baby pillow spray

SRK16 · 07/01/2021 13:05

Tbh I would just get her some bits! Chocolate/treats, some pampering bits, loungewear...

peachypetite · 07/01/2021 13:16

She will have everything she needs to why not get something for her instead of the baby? I recently sent new parents a hamper from M&S full of snacks for the night feeds and it went down so well.

You sound lovely and kind but I agree with the PP who said she will have all this already. I'm due my third soon and I wouldn't need any of those things you have listed even though they are very thoughtful ideas. When you have already got small children you pretty much have all those things in already and on the versions of them you prefer rather than someone else's choice of say baby wash or whatever. Either ask her to exactly say something she needs or try very hard to think of something she won't have.. that might be tricky! Treats for mum are nice but equally I also would already have all the things I would want to eat in advance and no chance will I have time for any kind of pampering with nice toiletries etc to take place either now with my older 2 around or once baby comes so guess that would depend on your friend and whether thats also true for her or not. Sorry so unhelpful but I have received so many lovely things for my 2 children some of which I never got round to using and know it will happen again with baby number 3 because I have such kind friends and family, but I hate the idea my lovely friends are wasting their money when I end up donating to charity or passing on to other friends with babies as I ended up with so many baby vests for example!

I agree with above, sorry.

I have just one baby, but hardly use anything on your list:

Water Wipes

  • Nappy sacks - never used,
  • Calpol - have one packet, used one dose in 8 months.
  • Sensitive baby bath - don’t buy, mine is allergic to most.
  • Plain white sleepsuits - she will have if 3 small children already
  • Small teething toy - she will have.

Just get something for her. I received a lovely hamper when baby was born, it was basically afternoon tea selection ‘scones, jam, clotted cream, fancy tea, Prosecco’

Otherwise, best item was from our neighbour friend. She gave us x10 IOU homemade vouchers for 30 mins pram walks. When I need time to do something she picks ds up in pram and takes him for a local walk.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 07/01/2021 14:21

I agree, stick to edible stuff - everything else she will have already! Plus I never used baby bath wash, nappy sacks, water wipes etc. Chocolate and biscuits, or some nice ready to eat meals, would be better.

A lovely friend bought me pampering stuff when I had my first - it's still unused as I don't have time for baths /face masks etc!

ivfbeenbusy · 07/01/2021 14:28

To be honest she probably already has this stuff coming out of her ears

Why not get her some vouchers for something like LoveKeepCreate where she can get things made out of the baby clothes like quilts or toys etc

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 17:57

When my baby arrived, a friend brought over a week's worth of homemade food, already divided into meals for two that we could just heat up - sort of home made ready meals! That was brilliant. That might not be practical for you, but could you get her something like vouchers for a takeaway? I bet at the moment almost any local food place would do you a voucher for a takeaway, even if they wouldn't normally!

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 18:02

Another suggestion I'd make is a toy or game to amuse the older children.

Icytundra · 07/01/2021 18:56

Just eat voucher would be lovely. Maybe something little for the other kids?
My daughter got a few colouring books/ magazines when many was born which made her feel better/ shut her up!
