Really bad nappy rash

Lots of posts from me today, sorry! Having a tough week!

My DS (1) has seriously bad nappy rash. Very raw and very angry. It started about 3 days ago due to teething and many wet nappies, he then done a rare poo in the middle of the night and slept through, so I wasn't aware until I changed him when he woke up.

Any tips on how to ease it? We have metanium which seems to be helping.

I can't get out to shops as we had covid tests today and are waiting for the results.

I've tried nappy free time where possible too

Just anxious it will get worse and I hate seeing him uncomfortable

Drapolene cream was recommended by dr as well as timodene (I think that was on prescription). Both made a huge difference very quickly. It will clear quickly if you get the right thing, my poor dd's skin was raw

I used zinc and castor oil cream and my DD only had a very mild rash a few times. It’s cheap and I would plaster it on her bum.

If it's the blistery raw type of nappy rash, definite stick with the metanium ointment. (The cream is nowhere near as good.)
Dc1 is now mid 20s (yes I can still remember it very clearly!), and suffered terribly while teething. It was the only thing that helped.
You need to gently spread it as the skin is so sore, but as long as you've cleaned the skin well, it really does provide a good barrier. (You'll find you need to wash your hands after, if only to get the remnants of the ointment off!)
I hope it calms down soon.

Metanium cream is amazing. It'll help really quickly

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 06/01/2021 21:52

I second drapolene. I cant believe its not mentioned on these nappy rash threads more often tbh

We never had nappy rash with our son but have had it for our daughter. She gets it and only gets it really bad. Tried all over the counter stuff, called the GP got some magical cream and she sorted. Call them and ask they can help you but I would try over the counter stuff first to help reduce the load on your local surgery. Last resort they will help x

Maybe speak to your GP? Might be infected.

Findahouse21 · 06/01/2021 21:55

I read somewhere on here that if you use metanium, you shouldn't remove it with water or wipes as it basically re-tearrs the skins and undoes the healing that the cream has promoted. The advice was to remove with oil - coconut, baby, olive etc. I don't know if it's true but ivve stuck with that advice and it seems to work

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 06/01/2021 21:56

The only thing I would add is, make sure the skin is dry before putting the cream on.
I made ds much worse by sealing the moisture to his skin with the cream Sad

elvislives2012 · 06/01/2021 21:57

If you're breastfeeding squirt a bit of milk on it

WednesdayAllTheWay · 06/01/2021 21:59

We never used wipes, cotton wool and water. Metanium has been good when it got bad.

Parkmama · 06/01/2021 22:00
  • yellow metanium ointment
  • bepanthen cream
  • use a flannel and water not wipes
  • plenty of nappy free time
  • pat dry thoroughly (and gently!) after cleaning

Acidic poo and consequently bad nappy rash is a side effect from teething 100% once that tooth is through, things should calm down Thanks

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 06/01/2021 22:09

Zinc castor oil cream is amazing! it’s dirt cheap aswell. You can get it in savers for 89p. It’s not as thick as sudocream so you can spread it on really evenly

Mysa74 · 06/01/2021 22:10

I agree with previous posters, wash baby with water. Baby wipes burn tender skin, they're evil. I speak from personal experience after blowing my nose on one when my hay fever was bad, boy did it hurt!

movingonup20 · 06/01/2021 22:39

Sudocreme cures all! Actually use water (plus soft washable cloths) rather than wipes if possible, nappy off as much as you dare, and keep a note of diet in case it's aggravated by certain foods,

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 06/01/2021 22:41

We found yellow metanium just wasn't helping. What worked for us was a thin layer of caneston nappy cream then a layer of bepanthen. During teething, DD's bum would go from being peachy to red raw with literal open sores over the course of an hour or two in between nappy changes.

Disco91 · 06/01/2021 22:41

I found water wipes stopped the reoccurrence of nappy rash as well as switching to pampers nappies
