DD always cries at bed time !

My DD is almost 1 year old. She always cries when I put her in her cot to sleep. I can't stay in the room or she'll keep crying. The only option is to leave and then she stops within a couple of minutes usually. Am I doing something wrong ? She also does this sometimes at nap times. She also always cries every time her sleeping bag goes on. Is there anything I can do ? Or is it just this way ?

That sounds normal settling herself really

My little boy did this on and off for quite a long time when he was that age and younger. I believe it's pretty normal settling :)

If she's only crying for a couple of minutes before setting I honestly wouldn't worry. She'll likely grow out of it. You have a sleep problem when the crying won't stop, and that's not the case here.
Try not to stress.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I just thought she would stop doing it once she's learned to self soothe and is sleeping through the night well ( which she is doing at the moment ). It just feels mean that she is upset every time she needs to sleep and that I need to leave her in order for her to settle.

@username1909 my DS cried every night between bath and sleep from birth, and nothing we tried worked. By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs he was asleep so we just figured he was releasing energy! Bed time was never relaxing.
To reassure you he’s almost 2 now and still cries when he has to get out of the bath, but loves getting in his sleeping bag and goes to sleep no bother with no fuss, in fact he watches us leave the room to make sure we’ve gone and then goes off to sleep! I can’t remember when exactly it changed, but it did.

My daughter still does this. She will say she's tired and that she wants to go to bed but literally cries every time we put her down for a minute or two. It's not a full on upset cry, so I usually just leave her to it and she's asleep within a few minutes

My 18 month old has only recently stopped doing this and will still do it if she's overtired. I think it's completely normal and there's a difference between having a bit of a shout and a proper distressed cry.

Ohalrightthen · 05/01/2021 19:33

It's a protest cry - she's tired but she doesn't want the day to be over so she's having a whinge. When she's talking properly it'll turn into "just 5 more minutes!!" but for now all she can do is squawk a bit!

GinTonic123 · 05/01/2021 19:34

My daughter did this every night until my husband told her at about 18 months old that she didn’t have to cry when she went to bed - and she stopped from that day onwards. It was amazing.

Aw thanks everyone ! It's horrible isn't it ? Like they cry themselves to sleep every night. Sad but yeah it is what it is and stops very quickly. She's also such a madam at the moment and cries in such despair when she can't have what she wants in general. Proper sobbing. Sad
