What is going on? (Breastfeeding)

12wk old has been absolutely fine up till now. But the last few days he's absolutely screaming when I offer him the breast. At first I thought I was getting his signals wrong and that he must just be tired, but today he has been routing like mad, yet the second I bring him to my breast he screams as though he's in pain or really doesn't want it. I've tried changing positions, lying down, walking round. The only thing that helped at all was rocking him over my shoulder to get him close to sleep then quickly transferring him to the breast almost before he realises what's going on.
But it's very strange and seems to have come out of nowhere... Has anyone else had this problem? I'm worried he won't be getting enough milk, although he seems absolutely fine and is producing wet nappies etc.

Have you changed shower gel or anything? My baby objects to anything other than unscented soap.

My little one went like this when she had a stomach bug coming sorry

Frustration at having to wait for the flow? Can you express a bit so it's already flowing?

Mine used to do this before growth spurts. Lots of fussing increasing the supply theoretically.

Could he be windy? Maybe teething even?

ForeverBubblegum · 04/01/2021 19:59

It's a bit early but check her gums in case she has early teeth coming in, also check for any white in her mouth as it could be oral thrush making feeding uncomfortable. Make sure you are winding her enough, if not she could have an uncomfortable tummy she is associating with feeding?

If non of this, just carry on as you are, as long as your getting enough milk in, it will pass. If you're worried she's not getting enough, or are feeling too full, have you tried expressing a little, and seeing if she'll take it indirectly, if she takesbottles too (offer breast first, just as a back up). During one especially bad nursing strike I ended up feeding DS milk from a calpol syringe, just to get a little in so he would sleep and dream feed.

Sometimes babies do just get fussy at the breast. Try hand expressing a bit first so they get a faster flow quicker , it could be as simple as impatience.

Thanks so much for replies everyone. He fed well overnight in the end. I have eaten lot of cheese over the Christmas period so I'm going to try cutting down now and see if that makes a difference.
Toddler also has a bit of a cold at the moment so wondered whether he might have picked that up which could he making him fuss.

Possibly silent reflux? This is basically exactly what DD did - went mental on the boob and had to be upright. Didn't feed properly, dropped centiles, i nearly lost my mind, GP prescribed infant gaviscon and she was better in 2 days.

Ohalrightthen · 05/01/2021 08:17

Feeding better overnight also fits with silent reflux IME, no idea why.

KatieKat88 · 05/01/2021 08:23

Any reflux/silent reflux symptoms OP?
