How much does your 11 month old understand

I’m a first time parent and due to covid and none of my friends having or wanting babies I’m a bit in the dark. Firstly my baby has no interest whatsoever with wanting to crawl or shuffle. She does like assisted standing and gets excited to play while standing.

However on the other scale of things she seems to understand a lot of what me and my partner say. We can ask her to get certain toys for us, which she does. Can point to her mouth and nose when asked. If I say stick your tongue out she does. When she finds bits of stuff in the floor she shakes her head and hands it to me immediately. When I say to to take her dummy out of her mouth after naps or when she’s inexplicably managed to get hold of one at other times, she does. If I ask her if she has anything in her mouth so will open her mouth wide to prove there’s nothing there. She will kiss and hug when asked and if I ask her to kiss Daddy or Granny she will turn to them. We also ask her to lie down which she does. We can ask her to give something to us but then I might say “give it to Granny” and she turns and hands it over to Granny.

I guess what I’m really saying is, is this totally normal? I’m pretty sure she isn’t behind in her language development but is she in front. Conversely I’m pretty sure she’s behind in her movement! I know all babies mature at different rates but I just want some other mums feedback as I have no one to talk to about it.

Em so mine is 13 months now, also understands a fair bit but not as much as yours so yours definitely sounds advanced there. On the other hand mines started crawling much earlier, was coasting I think at or before 11 months and has just started walking. However I have a friend who’s baby does the same as yours and likes to stand but not walk or coast, didn’t ever really do much crawling etc. I would say it’s still in the bounds of normal therefore.

I have an 11mo. No crawling but rolls everywhere. Likes walking around with assistance, standing next to sofa etc. Understands “no” and gives things but by what you describe doesn’t do as many things as your baby. Have you had the review with HV yet? Mine wasn’t concerned about lack of crawling, advised to do more tummy time which is difficult with a baby that just rolls off.

I think that’s pretty good for 11months, it’s hard to tell how much they can understand when they can’t talk isn’t it, but I don’t think my DD (18months) was showing signs of understanding those types of things until the last few months really. She was walking at 10 months though.

Like you say, they all do things at different stages. I really wouldn’t get too carried away with whether she’s ahead or behind for her age, unless there are serious causes for concern, which it doesn’t sound like there are. They all tend to level out and I don’t think in a few years it’ll matter who walked or talked early or late.

Your DD sounds quite advanced with understanding. Don't worry about crawling and walking - DD started crawling at 10ish months but only became the efficient crawler she is now at around 11 and a half / 12 months. She has only just started standing up by herself but holding onto furniture too. She's 13 months tomorrow.
Her so each is quite good and she has a number of words and understand things like a cat meowing means a cat is out of sight and she should go hunting for it and she can climb out stairs but she doesn't have the comprehension (or perhaps obedience!) of your daughter and would never willingly show me what she had just stuffed in her mouth. She does pick everything up off the floor and show it to me to highlight my slatternly approach to housekeeping though 😂
HV told me that they often advance one set of skills and then another so an early talker won't be an early Walker etc so just give her time to build her gross motor skills but they will come too. I doubt she is behind because the window of time to achieve those tasks is so big (and crawling isn't even a milestone!) your daughter does sound advanced on her comprehension though!

Both mine have been the same with understanding at that age. Dc1 understood well AND listened and followed instructions, still a very compliant child at 5. DC2 understands but couldnt give two fs and runs off to do something else with a "oh you want me to fetch my toy, yes I will do that and now I'm going to chuck it in the toilet!!" Look

My dc was walking at 10 months but couldn't understand or say much for a long time.
Hv wasn't worried at all and said they tend to focus on different things at different rates and times, eg early walkers can be late talkers and the other way round so I wouldn't worry at all.

Is DC2 also my DD?? 😂

I think a lot of babies are either ‘movers’ or ‘talkers’ as they tend to focus on one skill at once - really either physical or cognitive. You clearly have a talker!
I had one very early crawler who then just seemed to stop on the verge of walking for about 5 months while she caught up a bit on her understanding. She’s now nearly 3 and is extremely articulate but very uncoordinated! Most of them get there eventually, just not all in the same order.

MalonsMilk · 01/01/2021 15:00

This has made me feel so much better. DD just points, shouts Baa! and expects to be picked up and carted to it -she's actually starting hurt my back! It was strange as she was a very early roller (could roll to back and front at 4 months) but now she can't be bothered at all.

The HV in my area isn't doing the checks unless absolutely necessary but when she used to be seen DD was classed as an alert baby but I figured that was a nice way of saying she was a horror to get off to sleep! :D

Definitely agree with movers or talkers though, dc1 talked early, sentences by 18 months. DC2 is less verbal, understands well but can only manage the odd "DOG!" But has been walking (crashing around like a rhino) since 9 months

Timmytimeout · 01/01/2021 15:10

Sorry meant to say dc1 wasn't walking until 16 months

You should still get your 1 year check up with the HV although this will be via video call.

MalonsMilk · 01/01/2021 17:52

Ah I might try and make an appointment at the same time she’s due for her vaccinations.

Just to let you know in my area it was just a normal phone call not a video call but they sent you a survey to complete before.
