My bright very articulate DD has yet to do anything in a potty or on the toilet. She will sit on them quite happily and then says she has done a wee. If I put her in pants she just wees everywhere, even next to the potty. I have a 4 month old so I am thinking of trying to get some training pants so she can at least feel when she is wet. Any recommendations or advice gratefully received.

I put my dd in the garden with a potty nearby (in the summer, obviously), because I realised she had no idea that she was weeing. She started getting the idea when she was weeing on her feet, looking surprised, and I urged her over to the potty and we caught some there. Much praise etc and she started getting it.

She did seem to need to have a few accidents before she got the point.

We also used chocolate buttons for a success (not just sitting on), then changed to stickers as she was getting loads of chocolate after a while.

They do it when they're ready, but with modern nappies I think they sometimes don't have a clue what's going on.

ds was 3.2 when he trained. havent had any accidents! dont worry, she wont go to uni in nappies. not unusual at all not to be ready at her age.

Panic not! You may be in for an easy ride like I had.

My DD1 is very intelligent and very articulate but had absolutely no interest in potty training (esp since her newborn baby sister wore nappies, she still wanted to be mummy's baby too - though she wouldn't admit it).

Everyone kept asking when I was going to potty train but I just didn't feel like going through all the hassle with DD2 'monster' to cope with too so I left it.

When she was 3yr 2 months she went up to the next class at nursery where most children were potty trained so I spent a week making out how cool mummy's pants were , then took her to tescos to get some cheapy pants of her choice. The next day she wore pants, used her potty 23 times (honestly) but had no accidents, every day the number of potty uses decreased until it was what you might consider a more 'normal' frequency and that was it - job done! At night she wore 'bedtime pants' bambino mio training pants so she knew if she hd had an accident but we didn't end up having to change the bed all the time.

If your DD is very smart like you say, I bet she'll tell you when she's ready to start (she's probably too busy with other, more important, things right now). btw all those fancy pull-up things and feel-wet nappies didn't work for my DD1, they were a waste of time and money and just confused her.

Good luck, but I bet you won't need it

Thankyou for confirming what I was thinking, that my DD won't be forced and it will happen eventually if I give her time. (mind you gets a bit frustrating when everyone keeps telling me theirs are in pants and they're all younger than DD ) Giving it time worked with Ds1 so I will try and keep the faith!

Good for you!

I could have written this post only its my DS not DD. He is also 3 in December and will not do anything on the potty, though he will sit on it now. Lots of my friends have potty trained their LOs but I know DS1 cant be rushed and that the timing is poor with DS2 being only 5 months. But its good to know that others are in the same boat....
Not too sure he would think my pants were cool either! Am watching this thread with interest...

When i mentioned training pants to feel the wetness I wasn't meaning disposables. Far too expensive. I thought there might be some washable somethings with a waterproof exterior?

Well, we used bambino mio training pants at night and they were very good (hidden waterproof layer). There are lots of others on the market - tommee tippee closing down sale = £2.99 each at the moment on their website. They are only designed to stop leaks really so once they have been wee'd in once they need to be changed.

my DD only thought my pants were cool coz I had some bright pink ones - they came in a multipack OK!! .
