I started potty training my ds about 5 weeks ago (he was 2 years and 2 months)and he was doing exceptionally well. After about 2 weeks he was wearing underpants all day and telling me when he needed a wee or poo.

We even managed trips out succesfully and if he needed to go he would go on a travel potty. I was feeling soooo chuffed with myself and so proud of my clever little boy - even slightly smug that we had got it over and done with so quickly until.............

Yesterday for some unknown reason he went on his potty and halfway through a wee decided he wanted to get up - even though he was still mid-stream. All afternoon then he would wet his pants or wee on the floor. It was as if we were back to day one and I couldn't understand why.

This morning he seemed back on track and went a few times but then whilst at mother and toddler group he wet his pants twice.

Is it ususal for them to regress so dramatically when I thought we were home and dry (literally).

Any advice would be helpful.

my ds was ptty trained at 2.3 and now were back in nappies lol they go through stages like this best just to keep reminding him but dont get cross its unusual for boys to be trained this early anyway i'll start again when he shows signs of wanting to do it again i do still encourage to go to potty or toilet

who said it would be easy lol

JoshuasYummyMummy · 25/10/2007 11:59

Oh no - not nappies again!!!

I was hoping somebody would say it is probably just a blip and he'll be back to normal in a day or so.

It's likely to be just a blip, and most of us experience it. He's testing his bladder capacity, that's all. He has to learn himself.

A great analogy is with learning to walk. They don't learn to walk without falling over do they? They don't usually learn to potty train without the occassional accident either. All normal, and part of the learnng process. Not necessarily a reason to put him back in nappies especially as he did so well to begin with!

Of course don't get cross with him when he has an accident, but do let him know it's not the thing you want him to do. And of course lots of praise for when he does use the potty.

JoshuasYummyMummy · 25/10/2007 12:16

I wouldn't get angry with him - it's just so dis-heartening when I thought we were all done with potty training.

Guess I was a bit naive to think it would be that easy!

you'll get back on track with the potty training, try not to stress about it(easier said ten done I know!)

I just feel a bit at a loss as to what to do now when we are out. If I put him underpants and he carries on wetting himself it will be a nightmare, but if I put him back in nappies it may take him further back than necessary.

See my thread from yesterday DS (29m) toilet trained...........

I am going through a very similar situation.

I DO NOT want to go back to nappies. We have gone through so much to get where we are. I am going to ride it out with the help of Bright Bots Trainer Pants available from www.plushpants.co.uk. Look like pants in bright primary colours but they have a plastic liner. DS will think he has pants on and I will treat him as if he has pants on ie. encouraging him to go to loo, but if he has an accident it will buy some time when out and about. They wash really well and you CAN stick them in the dryer even though the label says not.

I am also going to consider positive encouragement in the form of chocolate footballs (for both of us!)

Glad I'm not the only one!!
