My 19 month old has outgrown his sleep sack which is meant to be upto age 3 (he is 99th centile for height) After reading this article I’m terrified to switch to a duvet ? I’ve got one ready that doesn’t have a sheet so a cover less duvet, is this a safer option? Am I over reacting? I’m so anxious about him suffocating after looking on google Daffodil

You can get bigger sleeping bags or use a very lightweight duvet of no more than 4.5tog

Toddlermum1256 · 27/12/2020 10:59

He is in a cot bed with the sides still on so it’s a cot bed cover less duvet..

Thank you yes it’s a 4 tog. But I’m still so nervous after reading the article.

It's an obviously very sad case but there must be thousands of young children who sleep under a duvet every night and are fine.

By 18 mo mine was unzipping her sleeping bag every night and so we used a duvet instead. You'll probably be up a couple of times to cover him back up while he gets used to it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/12/2020 11:29

Mine was still in a sleeping bag at the age of 3 and he’s very tall. Maybe look around for bigger one?

Toddlermum1256 · 27/12/2020 11:49

@OverTheRainbow88

What brand did you use ??
I would like to keep him in them but not really wanting to spend a lot on sleeping bags when he’ll be potty training soon -& money’s tight after Christmas.

There's an age 3-6 in sleeping bags. I'm sure there's even some up to age 10!

iusedtohavechickens · 27/12/2020 12:05

My 20mth old has been sleeping with a duvet for months. She's also been in a bed for the last 4 months as she was climbing out of her cot!

I wouldn’t worry about potty training at night just yet! My 4 year old still wears nappies to bed as do all his buddies.!!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 27/12/2020 12:35

What about a cotbed sized quilt?

pjani · 27/12/2020 13:26

The toddler duvet I got from IKEA was very small and light. It doesn't say in the article but I suspect it was a heavy adult duvet being used. I also wonder if there is more to the case given some of the background eg child protection issues. Honestly I wouldn't worry. We started using the duser just for naps so he got used to it (at around 18 months I think).

Lessismore2056 · 27/12/2020 14:37

@Toddlermum1256 I'm the same as you! Mine is a couple of month younger and luckily small so will fit in bags for a while. Slumbersac do ones for children so you could definitely get some big enough.
I was told that the most up to date AAP advice states that pillows should not be used until the child is in a toddler bed. When a duvet/pillow is in a cot, it is not as easy for them to push away when they're asleep.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/12/2020 19:03

I was also going to say that I’d like to know what size duvet was used. I would place money on it being an adult sized single duvet. My son went to a toddler duvet around 14 months when he started fighting the sleep bag. It’s very small and light, I’d imagine it would actually be quite difficult to get trapped under it. Keeping the duvet over the child is definitely more of an issue!

Toddlermum1256 · 03/01/2021 08:55

Thanks everyone , and for the link @OverTheRainbow88. it is a cotbed quilt I have @TwoZeroTwoZerobutz I’ve bought a 3-6 sleep sack now but it looks huge on him?! Do you think I could still use it if it’s really roomy at the bottom? The 18-36 size is definitely too small as feet are touching the end. I didn’t know that about the pillows I’ve had one in his cot for a few months now.

I’m soo glad you said that about the duvet size in the article @FizzingWhizzbee123 @pjani when I think about it your probably right .. that has really eased my worry’s ! So thank you :) x

It's fine to use a sack that's roomy at the bottom, as long as the shoulders aren't falling off at all.

I worried about my children getting cold when I moved my older ones to proper bedding. Not sure how to avoid that really, as a duvet with sleep sack would be too hot, but the duvet may not stay on!

Toddlermum1256 · 07/01/2021 19:04

@namesnamesnamesnames

Yes I worry about him getting cold or climbing out the cot .
I think the head bit is too big - his head doesn’t go all the way through but it could ride up probably half way , so it’s too big isn’t it ? It’s a shame as I can’t return now I’ve washed it. Guess il have to use a duvet as his 18-24 month bags are way too small 😞

Not ideal but do you have a tumble dryer? Could try using that but keeping an eye on it, maybe shrink the big one slightly?

AlwaysLatte · 07/01/2021 19:25

We had a Gro-to-Bed in between sleeping bag and duvet stages.

turnthebiglightoff · 07/01/2021 19:39

Mine is currently having night 2 in a toddler duvet (20 months). I'm concerned too but he takes sleeping bags off and it's -3 outside overnight, so I decided to focus on warmth.

happymummy12345 · 08/01/2021 12:17

My son had a quilt and pillow from when he went in his toddler bed at 17 months. It was the 4.5 tog toddler or cot bed size one.
He was perfect fine. Then again I hate sleeping bags and never saw the point of them so he'd al had cellular blanket and the coverlet from his crib bedding sets then the same from his cot bedding sets. Never had any problems at all

Toddlermum1256 · 11/01/2021 21:07

Thanks all, I tried tumble drying (great tip) looked abit smaller ... child went hysterical when I put him to bed couldn’t work out what was wrong till he pulled at the bag so refusing to sleep in it now and has fallen in love with the duvet , so I have no choice now 🤣X

@happymummy12345 I used them as they seemed a lot safer & warmer than blankets They also stop them climbing out the cot - unless there taking them off😫
