Night time bottle

So my LG turned 1 this week yay 💜 and I'm attempting the transition from formula to cows.
Now I know that 1 year olds are meant to only get cups but can I ask how anyone done the switch at night time?
I know she will move on when she's ready but I'm looking for advice.
Such as how did you do it did you sit with them while they drank the cup or did they go to bed with it ?
First time mum so any advice or even stories of how youse all done it would be great !
Thanks

Not sure what you mean by night time, do you mean in the evening ?

At 1 my son still used a bottle, he'd have spilt stuff otherwise. I let him transition on his own, at 1.10 he decided he no longer wanted a bottle.

Now that he is 2.2 I've just started giving him a sippy cup that he can access during the night if thirsty (water, not milk)

Also while I'm here lol
Did you just do the straight swap to cows milk or introduce it as drinks gradually my little one already gets cereals etc with it x

Didn't let DS go to bed with it until recently as he'd have spilt it on the sheets. I'd give him his bottle as usual in the evening (20h) before bedtime, he drank on his own, then off to bed. Then he got his morning bottle when he woke up at 6-7h

I tried to introduce the cow's milk, my son never took to it. He actually prefers my coffee ! Plain milk or chocolatey was turned down. I did not press the issue and give him yogurt instead.

I just switched to a cup at 12 months which they had milk in downstairs after dinner. Then upstairs to change for bed, story, teeth and put them to bed.

mindutopia · 22/12/2020 10:15

If you mean at bedtime, you just sit with them on your lap until they finish it and then put them in bed. If you mean overnight, this is a harder one to crack and you may either find it's easier to stick with a bottle for a tiny bit longer or you just do the same, sit up with them while they drink from the cup. You can't lie them down with a cup. It just spills everywhere. You shouldn't lie them down with a bottle either fwiw. Generally speaking though, a 1 year old who is eating well during the day shouldn't need milk feeds during the night for much longer. So I would work to phase that out and then ditch the bottle rather than trying to switch it to a cup. For bedtime though, it's just cuddles while they drink it and then you put them to bed.

That said, the transition to cow's milk for his porridge (which he loves) was completely smooth, swapped it one day and he didn't even notice.

Thesearmsofmine · 22/12/2020 10:16

I just did a swap once they had finished the last tub of formula milk. They already had cows milk in cereal, porridge, mash and the odd tiny drink.

Just to add in my experience it is usually much easier to get rid of bottles at a younger age instead of leaving it.

My 17 month old still has a small milk drink out of a bottle downstairs after tea. It hasn't been part of her bedtime routine for a few months.

She won't drink milk out of anything else and I'd rather she had the milk than make a battle of it. I will probably get rid of the bottle when she can reliably drink out of a normal open cup. If she still doesn't drink it then that's fine. She has a balanced diet with plenty of cheese and milk in cooking.

Ruddyfedup · 22/12/2020 10:21

Dd bungs up withing 10 days of me swapping 1 of her 2 bottles to cows milk despite eating an obscene amount of dairy normally anyway. On our second try now and it happened again so just riding it out within reason before i try the 2nd one as cows milk. She has one 1st thing and one before bed. Juice in a sippy cup throughout the day. Im in no rush to take her milk or bottles away

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/12/2020 10:21

I switched from a bottle to sippy cup at about 18 months - he loved his bottle and it helped him fall asleep, I saw no reason to change as soon as he turned 1. By 18 months he was much more aware of everything and I didn't want to have tantrums when no bottle appeared, so made the change then.

To transition from formula to cow's milk I gave him a couple of drinks of milk in his cup during the day to make sure it didn't affect him, then just stopped doing formula. He gave the bottle a funny look at first but didn't seem bothered at all.

Thanks so much for everyone's advice x she doesn't wake through the night which is half the battle haha I think I'm more worried because it is part of her routine she then wakes up hungry or whatever I feel this part isn't spoken about and your just kinda left to it ? Xx

Stopped breastfeeding at 12 months with them both and never offered milk at bedtime, didn’t see the point trying to introduce something new that you then have to phase out when they stop wearing nappies at night!

Jenny2020 · 22/12/2020 21:55

I'm just worried that it's knocks her bedtime routine x so I wondered what people done with regards to the cup like sit with them or put it in the cot..
I don't think my little one would sit with a cup and finish it she would prob think it's time to play haha !

Our 19 month old has milk in her bottle just before bed. It's part of the routine- we have a little cuddle in her room whilst she's drinking it.
She would have a melt down if this didn't happen! I'm too scared to break the routine.
Tried her with a sippy cup for her morning milk and she wouldn't touch it. Will try again after Xmas.

Jenny2020 · 01/01/2021 09:26

A little update
She had her jags 3 days ago and last night I decided to mix half formula and half cows as I have noticed she has a lot of gas curbing the day now with the cows milk 🌚
Last night we woke at 340 screaming ... jags or milk god knows why I started I should've maybe left it a week ?

Did any one leaving going to cows milk for a week or two after their birthday or am I being dramatic lol

I didn't personally have any issues with switching to cows milk myself as this is what is in formula? Just made the straight switch.

In terms of bottle I continued with bottle but brushed teeth in bed after. Then when he was 2 I transitioned by first giving him bottle on the couch instead of bed and then changing it to cup on the couch - just have to make sure you explain this cup is the bedtime milk as the 1st night my son asks for his bedtime milk after he drank the cup 😂.

He's 3 now and doesn't have any milk before bed.
