Is this nappy rash ? Or something else ?

Hello - been meaning to post this all evening but keep getting distracted ! Am using reusables for the first time with my 3rd child, and has been great up til now. He has developed a constant rash on the area above his willy, which spreads out towards his thighs, and is also at the inside top of each thigh. He also keeps getting bright red testicles ! It looks so sore, so have totally stopped using any wipes, and only been using water to clean him for 2 weeks now. No use. Sudocreme has not touched it, but have not tried anything else yet.
I am just asking because my others never had any nappy rash, so I am not sure what it looks like, and what area is is normally in. He has nothing on his bum cheeks!
Could it be eczema I am wondering ?
It runs in our family.

could it be a reaction to your washing powder?
I'd try running all your nappies through with no powder and a glug of white vinegar on a nice warm cycle to get rid of any residue and see if that helps.
Also make sure you're changing frequently enough (sounds obvious, I know).
what sort of liners are you using?

Thanks - I don't use washing powder I use those soap nuts ! This is because the other two have suffered from eczema, and I was advised that soap nuts might help as totally natural etc.
I use flushable liners.
i change him every 2 - 3 hours, or more if needed.

it probably isn't nappy rash, because that appears in the areas where he's pooed.

it could be something like thrush though - has your hv seen it?

chankins · 23/10/2007 21:16

O I didn't even think of that, no, I haven't taken him yet. Thought I would ask on here first, in case it is anything I am doing wrong with the reusables. It is red and blotchy, but also red and dotty. How would he get thrush if it is ?

I dunno, but they do get it. you need to wash nappies at 60 until it heals, and use canesten type cream (but I would get it looked at first).

Will do - thanks very much!

Sounds like thrush.

DS had it for no apparent reason. GP prescribed 1% canesten cream (the over the counter stuff is 2%). Cleared up very quickly.

As in adults thrush just happens and it MAY be triggered by the nappy change (or MAY not of course).

May be worth checking in his mouth for white patches on inside of cheeks coz occasionally babies get it in their mouths and it passes to their bums. (That's easily cured too).
