Help - how do I feed my baby chicken?!

I’m planning to poach some skinless, boneless chicken breasts for DS (8 months). Since starting weaning he’s had a mix of purées and finger food (toast, bits of veg). What is the best way to give him chicken - should meat be puréed or just cut into strips? He’s not got many teeth yet so I’m concerned about him choking - but on the other hand he has had bits of toast and veg already Confused

Oh :o I thought you were talking about a chick and wondered why this was in parenting!

I found chicken breast a bit dry for them at that age, so best added to a puree. Leg meat torn into strips was more accessible (and flavoursome) for them as finger food. I just cooked chicken in normal ways - I would have thought poached chicken would be extremely bland?

Same 😂

My DD had a very strong gag reflex so everything had to been pureed. It might depend on how many teeth baby has because meat definitely needs a bit of chewing. DD managed a lot better once her molars came out. Before that I'd puree it, usually with this recipe:

1/3 Cooked chicken or beef
1/3 Cooked carrots
1/3 Cooked potato

Puree together with loads of butter. The result tastes like a very rich mashed potato/veg puree which she really liked.

My baby similar age struggles to eat just chicken in strips. He has no teeth atm.

I usually purée a small bit into veggies, but have had a bit of luck giving tiny bits whole if it’s in some kind of sauce.

Without teeth although his gums might be hard, he just spits anything like that out. Only things than mash in his mouth can he cope with whole atm, like avocado, banana, boiled potatoes. Pasta is just gummed and spat out in solid lumps still.

Give him roast chicken and pull the bits of the thigh. It’s more moist and so easier to swallow and more iron rich

Why would it get stuck in his throat? Purées are teaching them to swallow without chewing, so giving actual food makes sense for teaching them basic motor skills and how to eat. Look up the difference between gagging and choking.

@evenBetter

Because it's a piece of food.

Worrying that it might get stuck in your child's throat is a perfectly reasonable and very common fear.
