Is it easy changing nappies in town centre?

I've not been out and about with my little one yet, (excepts park close to home) but after Xmas we are going to start going to cafes and shops in town, as safely as we can. I've checked a few shops online, such as waterstones and they say their bathrooms are not open.

How are people finding it when out with their babies, where are they changing their nappies?

Thanks for replies xx

Most places I have been have had their toilets and changing areas open (we're tier 2), I changed my little one in John Lewis at the weekend. If I get really stuck I would do it on the back seat/boot of the car.

We’re in tier 3 and all the shopping centres’ toilets are open.

If I had the pram with me I used to park up in a corner somewhere, put a folding mat/muslin on the seat underneath baby and change in there.

If I was using the sling is change just before we left and change in a public toilet or on my knee (worst case scenario) private(ISH).

I did think we might have to drive in just so we can change in the car, which is a shame as it's not that far to walk in. (20mins)

I just hate the thought of him having to be in a dirty nappy while we scramble to find a shop with a loo open or head back to car park

Are your local supermarkets toilets not open? Ive changed my baby in the changing area at the local supermarket and at a garden centre.

I am in tier 3 and am finding this hard as often toilets are not open. While we had the carrycot on the pram it was fine as I put a travel changing mat under DD and used that. However now she's in the seat and I can't really do that. I use the boot of the car a lot, which is grim in freezing cold weather!!

@PlantingGreen I've not been out with my baby, I get my groceries delivered

Marks and Spencer toilets and baby changing rooms are open. Boots often have a special baby feeding and changing room which are open atm. Cafés like Costa have toilets that are open too.

This is just what I've seen in my tier 2 city

mindutopia · 18/12/2020 16:07

You just have to go to a cafe and get a coffee and use their toilet. Anywhere that is open and serving sit down drinks and food will have toilets available. That said, I suspect there won't be much open in town centres after Christmas, so you may not have to worry. It's too cold outside to change a new baby in the car unless it's been heated.

Ticklemynickel · 18/12/2020 16:19

All the big shops here still have the changing facilities open - supermarkets, M&S, John Lewis etc. I'd do a quick change in the car (I found passenger seat just as easy with a new baby as the boot!) or in the pram if needs be. I've got a small waterproof changing mat in my bag at all times for out & about changes.

Plenty are but we often ended up on the back seat of the car to do it. Or grimace apologetically at shop staff while waving said stinking child at them.

DappledThings · 18/12/2020 18:25

Supermarkets, department stores and cafes still have open toilets even in tier 3. I used the Costa toilets this week. It wasn't obvious whether they were actually meant to be open or not, there was a sort of barrier but I decided it was ambiguous enough that my 2 year old's need for a poo allowed me to take advantage.

WutheringShites86 · 18/12/2020 22:09

I'm in tier 3 and only the supermarket toilets are open in my town.

DressingGown87 · 18/12/2020 22:45

I think it’s hit and miss. I went to one shopping retail park (quite large) and only place with toilets open was costa coffee (had to ask for the pin and by a takeaway coffee). I went to another retail park and no toilets where open, even marks and Spencer’s, Boots etc where closed! So had to go to the McDonald’s down the road. I’m in tier 3. I would just change in the car, or carry cot with changing mat underneath.

Thanks for your replies. So it is mostly as I feared then and I'll make sure we are never too far from the car (we are tier 3 Scotland)
