Has your baby ever choked on vomit

DS is 6 weeks old and gave me the biggest fright today. He vomited a huge amount of milk (mixed with mucous despite not having a cold) out of his mouth and nose. But he started choking and couldn't breathe or cry turning a strange shade of red almost blue. Panicked, I flipped him over and patted his back hard to get it all out and get him breathing again. It wasn't working and eventually after what seemed like forever, he got his breath back. Those few moments though scared the hell out of me. DH had rang for an ambulance when it seemed to go on, they recommended we take him in to get checked incase he aspirated any liquid whilst vomiting. He was checked over and is fine but has oral thrush and maybe some reflux issues. Has anyone else experienced similar with their young baby? The doctor said the chances of it reoccurring are rare but I'm so scared of leaving him alone even for a minute. I'm anxiously googling what to do if a baby can't breathe and feel like I should know all this already. I feel so helpless. They say a baby can't choke on vomit and turns its head to get it all out. But they clearly can! He is still grunting and I can hear phlegm so worried it will make him vomit again.

My nephew did when I was home with him and his mum. The same thing happened - he choked on his milk mixed with mucus and started to turn blue even with several attempts to tap his back and help him. In a quick flash I grabbed him and started to suck the mucus out of his mouth with my mouth (so I had to put my mouth over his nose and mouth and suck it out) and that’s when it all came out and he could breath again. It was terrifying. So scary and we went to the hospital after and the doctors said it was unfortunate and shouldn’t happen again.

Really really scared us honestly so I know how you feel.

It can happen with reflux. DN used to choke on his until he started treatment. He would also stop breathing at night because of it and needed a special baby monitor which the hospital recommended - really suggest you ask about these.

Yes - DS had v v severe reflux and did this on several occasions. Sounds like you acted quickly and appropriately. Get checked for reflux and allergies, always sleep in the same room as the baby. It’s terrifying but they do outgrow.

Keep baby close and upright, invest in a good bouncer and carrier/sling.
