Leaking Nappies

Hello,

Over the past week or so my 6 month old's nappy has been leaking every night. He's fine during the day when changed regularly but he sleeps right through the night (11hrs on average) and is waking up absolutely soaked! It's naturally effecting his comfort and sleep as he's started waking up earlier and earlier.

I've tried bigger nappies for better absorbance, smaller nappies for snugger fit, different brands of nappies (little angels, nutmeg, pampers drynites, etc.)... nothing seems to be working!

His bedtime routine means he gets his last bottle just before bed (8oz) but he gets his nappy changed and PJs on just before this.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss and find myself changing and washing sheets and sleeping bags daily.

I used to change my babies in her sleep once she started sleeping through because she didn’t wake up. So just before I would go to bed, if her nappy was fully I’d do a quick change and that seemed to work for us.

My DN did the same thing. They started putting a wrap, the ones you use with washable nappies over the top of the disposable.

You can also buy booster pads that you put in washables for extra absorbency.

Sorry, meant to say there's no reason you can't use these in disposables too Smile

Does he sleep on his side or wriggle round a lot? Do the nighttime pull ups work?

EatPoopSleepRepeat · 17/12/2020 08:31

@OnlyFoolsnMothers we tried changing him before we went to bed a couple of times but he woke completely and was difficult to settle again. It may be our only option though if nothing else works.

@JingleJohnsJulie my DM suggested a wrap for over his nappy, she said that she used to use plastic pants over our nappies when we were babies and it worked but I was a bit skeptic about making him so air tight if you know what I mean. I'll have a look online and see what options there are for this.

@bookish83 he sleeps on his back but is a bit of a wriggler. We tried the pampers nighttime pull ups last night and were really hopeful but he was wetter than ever this morning. We bought size 3 which are suitable for babies between 13lbs - 22lbs, DS was 17lbs 7oz when weighed last week so the sizing seems right.

We went through this at 6 months, a lot of the time we would have to change during the night feed. Not ideal as little one would wake up and more alert, but better than having a sore bum

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 17/12/2020 09:36

Is he leaking up and out it the front waistband? We found putting a Tena Lady horizontally across the inside of the front waistband prevented leaks.

I'm a cloth nappy user. If you want a wrap I suggest motherease airflows. Amazing. Look for old ones on facebook/eBay.
You want to make sure the PUL is sound (it's waterproof fabric) and elastics. That's probably all the jargon you need to know

My son always leaks from a side when he needs to go up a size, but I see you've tried that.

Have you tried aldi nappies? I swear by them. I put my son in the + nappies for extra absorption and so far no issues (other than when ready to go up a size) and he pee's loads and loads as he drinks water a lot.

ILoveStickers · 17/12/2020 10:10

If you get washable inserts, hemp ones are often the highest absorbancy. They are completely magical. No reason you can't use them in disposables.

For what it's worth, my daughter grew out of the overnight heavy wetting eventually, particularly once she stopped drinking so much just before bed. So it's not forever!

Once you're in size 4 or 5 nappies, they also do 4+, 5+, etc.

LemonDrizzles · 17/12/2020 18:17

Sorry no advice here only to add my little one did the same but we had a 2/3 am feed and I'd do a quick major change in between boob side (feeds).

CrazyKitkatLady · 19/12/2020 07:22

We had leaking problems and now put 2 nappies on at night. My DD is in size 4 in the day and at night we put her in a size 4 with a 4+ on top making sure the back is higher on the top nappy as that’s where she was leaking out each night. Been fine for ages now and don’t need to change in the night.

sproutsnbacon · 19/12/2020 07:26

As pp above said. I use two nappies at night one in the size that fits and one in the size above. I now have no more leaks and a baby that sleeps better.
With DS I’d tried extra liners, wraps etc but not just two disposables. Thankfully I twigged when dd was a new born.
