Did your newborn crying affect toddlers sleep?

My dd will be almost 3 when we have our second child. Our rooms are next door - I’m just wondering if newborn crying will disturb her of not...guess she’ll just have to get used to it 😂

My newborn didn’t cry a lot fortunately (the toddler is noisy though!), but white noise helps to drown things out in both directions

Didn't bother our oldest at all. Now they share a room and she still sleeps through everything

No not when newborn. My DC2 wasn’t v loud and settled when picked up and so thankfully wasn’t crying for long periods. Tried to put them in together after 8 months but when DC2 woke she would disturb DC1 who had just started reception so was constantly exhausted. Since then she’s been in a travel cot in the spare room. She’s 15 months now Blush. But honestly don’t worry! Kids sleep deep!

No. Kids sleep deeply (or wake at random times, but not due to noise). Mine have never been bothered by their siblings or even the fire alarm, which is slightly worrying.

Sitt · 15/12/2020 21:56

The fire alarm thing is common. Apparently children respond better to a human voice “alarm”

My DD is 4. Some nights she hears her brothers crying (she tells me In the morning and says she is tired). But most of the time she says she doesn’t hear them. I think if they happen to cry when she is going through a light patch of sleep it disturbs her, but not much. She has definitely been a bit more tired since they came home, but not massively.

My DD doesn’t seem to have been woken by our baby although in the first 2 weeks she woke in the night at other times which I think was due to all the changes. Since then she’s been fine and the bigger issue is her waking the baby in the morning when she wakes up at 5.30/6

Disappointedkoala · 16/12/2020 12:42

We had a few issues in the first week but she's gone back to sleeping as usual since then.

As with PP, our main issue is that telling her to be quiet as her sister is sleeping usually results in even louder yelling. Confused

FourPlatinumRings · 16/12/2020 12:47

Yes. I make a dive for my baby whenever he stirs because if I'm not quick enough I get, 'MUUUUUUMMY!' from down the corridor.

I dont think newborns can be streamlined, can they?! We just have to hop on and enjoy (endure?) the ride

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 16/12/2020 13:01

Wrong post! Sorry

I’ve taught children at school who are tired due to having a new baby brother or sister. Like all the family it’s a phase you go through.

Got a 6 week old here and I think my 3 yr old might have been woken by his crying once (he got out of bed at 3.30am which was just after a baby feed), otherwise he seems undisturbed

OverTheRainbow88 · 16/12/2020 13:15

I had to move my elders sons bed to the other side of his room; and the baby’s cot to the other side as we set it up so they were both against the same wall... error!

firesong · 16/12/2020 13:19

I don't know about a toddler, but my daughter was 6 when my second child arrived. She heard the baby the first night and never seemed to again! I think they just sleep through it.

Thanks all! I’m sure we will survive it lol
