Why does my 3 year old have 1 bright red cheek!?

Hi, my 3 year old has randomly developed one bright red cheek, he’s had a sore patch under his lip for a couple of weeks now (nothing new he gets it a lot) but all of a sudden this one red cheek has came up, it began yesterday afternoon but not too bright, seemed to fade by this morning and then when I picked him up from nursery it was beaming and seems to be getting brighter.

Other than his sore under lip he has nothing else wrong, no cold, no temperature, running around like crazy still so not sure what it could be, it doesn’t have any strange texture to it, just bright red.

Does anyone know what this could be! I would add a picture but I’m new here so not sure if I can or how!

I thought my DS 20 months had slapped cheek; it turned into something called scalded skin syndrome and he's on antibiotics for a week. It developed to a rash that looked like big scald blisters. It's a bacterial / staphylococcal thing; if it spreads quickly and it looks like blisters maybe give your GP a call. Most likely slapped cheek though!

I was trying to read up a little bit on slapped cheek and a lot of places said it would be both cheeks and he would seem ill too, have you found that it can be solely on one cheek and otherwise be fine?

I need to speak to the doctor tomorrow so I will mention it just incase thanks :)

Thank you everyone by the way!

Ear infection? Sinus infection? A tooth or gum issue? All of those would be really painful though.

Slapped cheek,my daughter had it when she was about 2 and was only one cheek.

Nadabel · 15/12/2020 21:16

Something teeth/mouth related crossed my mind as the redness starts next to his mouth and covers the lower/mid part of the cheek but like you said it would be painful and he’s not complaining of anything at all oddly!

Ah that’s good to know she only had it in one cheek too thanks

Does he have his second molars?

elsaesmeralda · 16/12/2020 16:10

Whenever my ds had a random red cheek it usually (for him) meant he was about to get a fever, so might be an infection of some kind coming

Nadabel · 16/12/2020 16:14

@BertieBotts no not yet? He woke up this morning and again it had faded but he’s came home from nursery today and it’s so bright and actually sore looking today, it’s in a much smaller area (closer to his mouth and not so much the full cheek anymore) but large enough to see from a distance!

Oh no @elsaesmeralda just in time for Christmas, fingers crossed not haha

Ah so could be 2nd molars coming in. DS2 always gets a bright red cheek when teething. It didn't always coincide with the pain, but in the days surrounding he'd either be chewing everything, unsettled, or have this one red cheek. Poor thing.

Frozen teethers still work well for toddlers.

EasyPeasyHappyCheesy · 16/12/2020 18:37

My toddler sometimes gets 1 red sore cheek when he has a sn8ffly nose as he keeps wiping away and the 'wetness' on one side with the cold makes it sore.

inappropriateraspberry · 16/12/2020 19:59

My 2 year old has pretty much got a red patch on his cheek constantly. It gets stronger at times, but he is otherwise well and not bothered by it. It could just be a patch of dry skin or some kind of birthmark.
We're happy just to see if he grows out of it at the moment, it doesn't look sore.

Nadabel · 18/12/2020 15:19

His cheek eventually went from just red to red and rash like and joined onto his lip sores, took him to the doctors and he said it’s perioral dermatitis so we were given some cream yesterday and it’s already began to clear thankfully.

Thank you all for your help and advice ☺️
