CMPA/reflux- where do I go from here?

DD is 9 weeks old.
Not happy unless she is with me - cant leave her on a bouncer or mat for more than a few minutes. All naps on me. We co sleep but she does sleep lying flat and will fall asleep like that at night.

Had some green nappies and slightly inflamed skin a month ago - tongue tie specialist suggested possible CMPA, I havent had dairy or soya since.

We got omeprazole for her, we've used it for 3 nights now, doesnt seem to be making a big difference but not sure what to expect.

Doctor has been useless. When should I expect to see a .difference if it makes one?. When should I try dairy again and should I eat a lot or.just a bit?

Any help much appreciated.

Silent reflux or reflux? Reflux can just be a developmental issue.

How long have you been dairy and soya free? It needs to be at least 6 weeks to have left both your systems.

OhToBeASeahorse · 13/12/2020 18:02

See the doctor said a month, maximum.

I think it might be a bit of both. Or she might just be bloody hard work.

I dont know.

Both my girls have CMPA. It’s a month max for formula feed babies, 6 weeks for bf babies.

Having the same worry as you about my
Little boy!

Doctors unfortunately aren't massively clued up on CMPA. Id join the FB group ' breastfeeding with CMPA and other allergies ' and check out the blog Dilan and Me, run by the woman who runs the group. My son is almost one and has CMPA/soya allergy and the group has been invaluable to me!

Most people will see symptoms come back around the 4 week mark and fluctuate hugely in the 6 week DF/SF time - this is normal and doesn't mean that it isn't working. When you hit the 6 week point, if you are symptom free, you need to eat a portion of something high up the milk ladder eg a yogurt/milkshake and wait 72 hours to see a reaction. The reaction does not need to be the same as the symptoms you saw before, but a change in any way counts as a reaction. If no reaction seen, you need to eat that same portion for 3 days in a row and see if there is a build up of a reaction Smile.

It's too late now but it's also recommended to cut dairy for 6 weeks then soya if symptoms still remain so you can accurately pin point which one, if either, are the allergen.

Thank you! It's such a minefield with small babies! Can I ask where the 6 week thing has come from? Both Kellymom and Breastfeedingnetwork say 4 max.

The 6 weeks is 3 weeks to leave babies system and 3 weeks to leave yours so 6 weeks in total. If you were FF it would be 3 weeks which is where I think your GP will have got the 1 month from 🙂 i can speak only from experience but at 4 weeks we still had symptoms and by 6, they were gone. If you've done a month, a few more weeks won't hurt!

I could have written this post myself OP but I really don't think it's CMPA. DS is in what seems like so much discomfort after every feed, straining and crying! He is sick a lot too and omeprazole hasn't touched it!

OhToBeASeahorse · 14/12/2020 08:33

Oh gosh that's stressful for you. Have you gone dairy free?

My little one has reflux, I'm looking into cmpa although my gp has said it's unlikely as she is gaining weight ok. I don't know if this is true or not.

We are on omperazole, it took 7 days to see some improvements, we had the dose increased and weight adjusted after a couple of weeks and that made a big difference. A few weeks ago she outgrew her dose and her symptoms returned, we have had it adjusted to her current weight but it's not had the effect it had previously.

We probably left it a bit later to call the Dr about getting to dose adjusted so do keep a close eye on your little one weight and dose.

Weight gain does not rule out CMPA - My son has never struggled with weight gain and definitely has it! In fact a high percentage of babies with CMPA comfort feed to make up for the discomfort experienced and gain wait well.

I urge you all to do your own research if you suspect an allergy and get clued up so you can go back to the GP with your own evidence and get a dietician referral 🙂

Superscientist · 14/12/2020 17:17

@Missmonkeypenny thanks, I'm keeping a reflux and food diary at the moment. Me and my partner went through it earlier and I'm now thinking that she is reacting to soya. We are mostly veggie and definitely see an increase in symptoms in the 72h after eating soya meat/diary substitute products. I have decided to eliminate that from my diet to start with.

Our HV is coming on Wednesday, I am going to speak to her. Our GP isn't being very helpful, she was at first and put in a referral to the paediatrics and dietician but their response was she's gaining weight, she will eventually grow out of it. So now this is the line our GP now repeats. She made a joke about having to just put up with having the washing machine on continually as if that was the difficult bit about a refluxing baby was the washing! (we are using a cloth nappies so it's on every other day anyway!
