DS sounds so miserable :(

DS (8 months) sometimes makes a noise that sounds like crying but when I check, he has no tears. A sort of repeated moaning/wailing sound is the closest thing I could compare it to! I left him to nap this afternoon and he was making that noise for about half an hour before falling asleep. I went in and checked, gave him a cuddle and there were definitely no tears - but he clearly wasn’t exactly happy either.

What does it mean and should I have picked him up and comforted him more? I was just trying to get him to sleep as he was obviously very tired, but am worried I did the wrong thing! Is this what is known as grizzling? I feel so guilty for leaving him to it but was really struggling today. He woke up about 4 times last night and I was so shattered and desperate for a nap myself.

DD always used to have a grumble before she went to sleep.

Generally I’d give her ten minutes of grumbling before going in to give her a pat. If the grumble changed to a cry I’d assume she needed something.

If you hear your baby cry at other times and can distinguish a difference between his proper upset cry and his ‘I’m fighting sleep’ moan I think you’re ok to leave him to it.

(DD is 3 now and settles to sleep easily so I’m pretty sure she’s not scarred by me having left her as a baby!).

Thanks. As soon as I hear his proper upset cry I’m straight in there - it’s just the moany semi cry with no tears that went on for ages which threw me! He’s teething atm so I don’t know if it could be that? I’ve been giving him regular doses of Calpol when I’ve sensed he’s struggling with his teeth...
