Hi everyone so I’m asking for abit of advice with anyone that has been through this, google isn’t my bestfriend right now 🙉 one of my twin girls has low white cells, I’m just wondering if anyone has been through this and what they do? My girls are only 5 months old and have both been though so much already, it kills me the thought of them going through anymore 😔

I know it's not quite the same but my teenage DD was flagged with this a few weeks ago as we were having her blood tested for why she was so tired...she had a low white count and the doctor tested her again a week later but they were normal again. She said it's if you've had an infection and you've been fighting it.

What else did the doctor say? Will they test again? Have the babies had an infection recently? Cough or cold even?

Thank you so much for replying, my babies was in hospital for there first few months on life, but she’s been tested while she’s been home and there still abit low, she hasn’t been ill at home or had a cold or anything, they have referred her to the hospital but they just said you will hear from us in due course, so we just got to sit and worry 🙉 x

I know it's terribly worrying...my youngest DD had a heart murmur and I basically sat in a state of high anxiety until we saw a specialist for a heart scan and he threw us out immediately shouting "Water in the pipes! Nothing but noise!"

I believe white cells can fluctuate when there's been a stress on the body and it sounds like she's still recovering. They're keeping an eye on them which is what they do...and they do it so well in the UK don't they?

This can be normal in premies. Are the twins being breastfed - that can help a little depending on how low the count is by exposing baby to your antibodies. If she’s weaned then eating live yoghurt / a wide variety of fruit and veg / pre and probiotics specially designed for babies / omega 3 can also help to improve gut bacteria which can eventually help low counts. DN was born so early and his counts were so low the consultants were basically preparing his parents for the worst - but it was entirely normal and they eventually went back to normal when he was around 1.

My son was born with low white blood cells. He was diagnosed with neutropenia in March when he was 4 weeks old. I've done months and months of research on this subject so I may be able to help you. @Stacey2007
