Baby eczema

So for as long as I can remember my 7 month old has been getting rashes on her chest in different blotches, on her back and also on her face... we have finally been told it's baby eczema after been told different things e.g a fungal infection, drool rash, teething rash... I'm just wondering how long can this last ? I know a lot of people have eczema when they are older but I wasn't sure if this is just something a lot of babies get? My daughters rashes can get so so bad and nothing really helps, the eczema cream we have been given seems to help a tiny bit on her chest but not on her face! It's awful, I don't want it to be sore for her :( sometimes it can look very sore especially on her face!

Our 21 month old suffers with eczema on and off across her body, back of knees, chest, crook of arm and generally hydrocortisone solves it.

Moisturise day and night as well to keep drying/tightening/itching at bay.

We've just had a very bad outbreak on her chin, not helped by dribbling and she rubbed/scratched it raw to the point of infection.

The usual hydrocortisone cream didn't touch it (wouldn't sink in and she could rub it off) but we swapped to an ointment hydracortisone which is more oil based and
it stuck far better, covered with a layer of barrier ointment it helped massively.

If the area is getting wet or not healing this might be route, both bits prescribed by Dr.

Allergens can make flare ups worse but its not easy to work out what it may be. A proper allergic reaction is far more severe than ezcema and an ezcema flare up may not present quickly making it hard yo work out what may be causing it. Childhood ezcema is very common, lots of eczema support sites with advice on triggers etc.

My DS has bad excema from when he was a baby. We used hydrocortisone when he had flare ups and Aveeno when he didn't. He is 15 now and has more or less grown out of it. We used to have to avoid soap and use special cleansers and products for sensitive skin. Holiday were times when we had bad flare ups as the mixture of sun cream sweat etc used to be an issue. We had to use special sun cream with Vaseline underneath it. I would recommend Aveeno and I think they do baby products now. We used to get the lotion on prescription but not that's possible now as the rules have changed.

Yeah we were prescribed with aveeno too, can you use these creams on the face ? As I have tried aveeno and the eczema cream we were recently given but they seem to make it a lot worse on her face?

We use the Averno emolient cream rather than normal which really helps my 3 month old boy, I slather him with it at every change which stops his skin drying out - and steroid cream when it really flares. Are you breastfeeding? If so apparently breast milk can really help - you can express and put some in the bath water or even make a cream out of it!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/12/2020 07:34

Can I just ask if you use baby wipes on her face or just water? My DF's LO had terrible eczema, stopped using wipes and Johnson's products and their skin was completely clear within a week.

mummytoaprincess04 · 09/12/2020 09:36

No I don't use wipes on her face... after her meals I use a wet cotton pad to wipe down and then dry it straight away

When she is having a bath I'm literally just using water at the minute too

My son was diagnosed with eczema at 5 weeks old, it was quite bad across his face, arms back of his knees. Was referred to dietitian who told me he might have cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). He was mixfeeding. She started him on Neocate formula milk and while I was breastfeeding I had to avoid dairy and soya. It started to improve a lot alongside Dermol 600 which I used to add in his bath instead of baby wash. He has Cetraben as moisturiser, which I used to apply at every nappy change. Health visitor gave me a sample of Adex Gel which I applied with flare ups. He has aveeno when having a bath since 5 months. He is 13 months old now and has been pretty much eczema free since 4/5 months old. Try to exclude dairy and soya for a few months if you're breastfeeding. It takes 2-3 weeks for dairy to leave your breastmilk. Hope this was useful...

My 10 month old DD had eczema all over her face from when she was born up until about 2 months ago. We switched her formula and it cleared itself up! Get your daughter to GP and request allergy tests :) we tried so many different creams etc and nothing worked, it was horrible to see her so uncomfortable!

overanalyser1 · 06/01/2021 20:49

@Needsadvice197 can I ask whether you did the allergy test and whether your baby came back with any allergies?

onedream · 07/01/2021 10:01

Eczema which is not improving with treatment could be food/intolerance/allergy related..I would be pushing on Gp for different treatment if the one you have prescribed doesn't work and/or for referral to have this looked into more closely..
