When did you start weaning

My son is going to be 5 months in a few weeks. I really want to start weaning as I was him to experience other things other than formula milk. I know NHS guidelines suggest 6 months, I'm not sure what's changed. I've spoken to other mums who have said first babies could eat solids at 4 months.

When did you start weaning

Recent research by Fewtrell et al in 2017 showed that in developed countries there is no disadvantage to weaning from 4 months (rather than waiting till 6 months).

My babies were over 10lbs at birth and no way were they going to last until six months. I started them on real food at about four months, both showed an interest in food and took to it easily. I breastfed my first until I returned to work when he was five months, and breastfed my second until she self weaned just before one year, though she was down to one feed a day by then.
They are guidelines, not the law. Do what you feel suits you and your baby best.

The advice when mine were babies was 12 weeks or 12lbs. I had big babies and my second was 12 lbs long before I started weaning. He went from being a misery to so happy once on solids.

6 months. BLW here, which was brilliant.
They grow up too fast as it is, don’t rush for the next milestone. Enjoy the last bit of non weaned time.

I remember excitement and being pushed by people I tried him on some baby rice at 4 months, he ate it, but it just didnt feel right to me. I had to feed him in his bouncer he was nowhere near strong enough to sit in high chair and I was just like what the hell am I doing, why am I rushing and why am I giving in to peer pressure from people like my mother who were 'I gave you baby rice at 9 weeks'

Hes just turned 6 months and I've just started. Not ready for BLW but fine with the purees. Can sit in his high chair now but still a bit wobbly.

5.5 months each child, exclusively breastfed until then. One swiped a chunk of cucumber from my plate, another was eyeing up my sandwich so had a chew on some crust.

Neither ate anything approaching a full meal until they were well over 1 - both mine were very slow off breastmilk and onto actual meals. Most ended up on the floor or ignored before then.

Following the guidelines at the time, I started DS1 at 12 weeks. It seems very early looking back compared to today's guidelines, but that's what we were advised in the early 90s.

By the time I had DS2 in 1995 it had changed to four months and was the same in 1997 when DS3 was born.

If I was having babies now I'd have followed the guidelines and weaned at six months.

#1 was 17 weeks as advised by HV when he started reducing his milk intake.

#2 was 5.5 months when she was showing signs and pinching food from plates or leaning forward to take "bites".

So much easier to wait and skip the puree stage!
