Rear facing car sear for a large toddler?

My DS who is nearly 3 is in a rear facing Maxi Cosi pearl on the Isofix base. Checking the limits on his seat though it says 18 kg or 105 cm. I need to measure his height but I know he was 95 cm last time I measured (a while back)! He weighed 17.2 kilos when I weighed him last week. So we need to move on quite soon probably, but all the rear facing Maxi Cosi seats only seem to go up to 18 kg? What do other people use when they have toddlers that are big?!

Nearly 3yo, 102cm and 18kg+DS is in a Britax max way which only rear faces and is up to 25kg. Still very comfy in it.

At 3 1/2 we turning him round putting him in a forward facing is isofix car seat. MN will hate me !!! His weight plateaued around then anyway, he was tall and bang on 18kg, but stayed there until 4 years old.

And don't tell anyone I put Dc2 forward facing at 10 months just due to money as the Pearl car seat had gone mouldy

If you want to continue rear facing you will have to use a seat that rear faces up to 25kg.

There aren't a huge amount of them and they aren't sold in chain baby stores, mainly specialists/online. It's recommended to get one fitted because they are a bit more complex to fit especially compared with isofix seats, but if you're happy to look at youtube videos and/or get remote support from a retailer it is quite possible to do it safely yourself.

Look at:

Axkid Move/Minikid/One
Britax Max Way/Multi-Tech
Klippan Century/Opti
Besafe izi Plus

@dumdumdumdumdum I’m not even gonna comment here as Mumsnet will hate me more 😢

I have the axkid minikid. I love it. It was expensive. The axkid move is apparently the same seat but without the bells and whistles and cheaper. If you have a younger one who would get use out of it too or plan another its definitely worth the money. Even if not if you are committed to rear facing it should last until age 6ish so still a few years left to use it and get the value for money out of it.

I would forward face them tbh, my 19 month old is in a swivel seat and is starting to scream when turned rearwards. I think il forward face him by 2 years he’s very big for his age too. I know its 500% safer for rear facing , but 3-5 year olds just look so big all squashed up in the back. They’ve got to go forward at some point ?

Boringnamechanging · 16/12/2020 23:23

My tall 4 year old and 2 year old are still rear facing. 4 year old is in an axkid minikid still very comfortable, he doesn't know any different and doesn't question it. I fully expect he'll be in the seat until 5 at least.

Another vote for Axkid Minikid. Love ours and will be buying a second for DS2.

DS has minikid in DH car. Looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO comfy (yes, I would like an adult one). Britax TWE in my car. It's ok. Does RF to 25kg but can also FF. We did move him up into these seats fairly young though as he was heavy and the infant seat/ carrying him in it really wasn't doing my back any good.
