When to increase feed and spread out duration between them

Hi ladies.
DS is currently on 6 ounces every 3 hours.
He has his bedtime feed around 9 and then wakes around 4-5am for another 3 ounces and then back down until 8-9 when he has his full 6 ounces and so on.
My question is, when do I up his feed to7 ounces and when do you start spacing out the feeds more to 4 hours in between feeds?
TIA

How old is baby? I always fed on demand so no particularly spacings, just fed when hungry.

If he's draining it, increase by an ounce.

Follow his lead on spacings

Don't force it

You should feed on demand. That means feed when he gives a feeding cue and always let him decide when he has had enough. If he drains the bottle you need to offer more milk.

He's 10 wks old now @3rdtimelucky2019
@Thatwentbadly he was fed on demand for the first 5 wks and then we put him into a 3 hourly routine which is working really well and he is a lot more settled.
He isn't draining his bottles and crying out for more just yet, I was just curious when I can expect a change in his feed and duration.
I think you're right @3rdtimelucky2019 once he starts draining the bottle and not getting up to 3 hours between feeds then I'll up it.
I won't space out the feed until he's ready.
Thank you ladies 🥰

You give him more when he starts finishing the bottle before that had less. So if he's drinking 6 oz, then offer 7. It's better to waste a little than to not offer enough. You feed when he's hungry, so just wait until it's 4 hours that he's showing hunger signs rather than 3. There are no hard and fast rules. It's totally down to how hungry he is.

Thatwentbadly · 04/12/2020 14:58

Can I ask why you have decided not follow what is currently advised by the NHS in regard to feeding?

3rdtimelucky2019 · 04/12/2020 15:11

If they're hungry don't wait for an arbitrary time gap. If you were thirsty or hungry you'd help yourself regardless of time. Baby is no different.

Littleelffriend · 04/12/2020 15:15

That’s loads for a 10 week old

lockdownpregnancy · 04/12/2020 15:29

@Thatwentbadly my HV and doctor at the hospital advised me with the feeds, amount and time between feeds and since then it's worked brilliantly as he was all over the shop before then and we didn't know if we were coming or going with him 😬
@Littleelffriend it is a lot of milk for a 10 wk old but he's a big baby and a hungry one at that.
We were initially told 3-4 ounces every 3-4 hours but there is categorically no way DS would accept that!
Before we upped his feed to 6 ounces last month he was screaming for so long because he was just hungry, it was torture!
My HV said babies aren't machines and going by the book isn't always possible as some babies need more than others. In my case, big baby, bigger feeds

@lockdownpregnancy I didn’t mean anything negative at all, if the baby is hungry you feed them! I’m maybe jealous, my 5 month old only takes 4oz per feed which means she wants fed every 2 hours

lockdownpregnancy · 04/12/2020 16:15

@Littleelffriend didn't take it negatively don't worry 🥰
I'm a FTM so all of this a mine field! 🤯🤯🤯🤣🤣🤣
