First shoes - advice please

Hi everyone, my DD is 15 months and not walking yet just cruising, but I think in a week or two it could be time to get her first shoes (excited!).
I'm really looking for advice on how many pairs I should get to start with? I'm thinking a nice shoe, maybe a trainer / boot type alternative and a wee pair of winter boots or wellies. Is that excessive? I'm not sure how often id likely need to get her feet remeasure and if its crazy frequent then maybe 3 pairs to start with is too much? I'm just not sure and while I know every little ones feet probably grow at a different pace, just keen to hear what others have done? TIA!

Get one pair. She’s only cursing so only needs them for an hour or so a day. Save the cash for when she’s running around and scuffing shoes and growing out them every 8 weeks.

One pair. They will only last a couple of months and cost £30+ each time. Plus a pair of wellies for a couple of quid - I get those second hand, but actual shoes always new.

My daughter had her first pair in July, second pair in September and needs another pair already.

One pair will be fine. DD got her first pair in July and they are still pristine. Although I did buy an emergency back up pair a few weeks ago after she booted one off in Morrisons. Luckily I did find it hiding down an aisle but decided it was time to have an emergency pair. Just in case.

No. Please don't get her any shoes yet.

The advice is to wait until they have been walking properly, not cruising, for a few weeks.

INeedNewShoes · 03/12/2020 22:53

DD just had one pair at a time for her first couple of sizes after walking. They barely wear them, especially at this time of year as the advice is to be shoe-less indoors anyway.

You'd be much better spending and getting a really good quality pair of shoes than buying three lots of footwear each size.

Thatwentbadly · 03/12/2020 22:53

She needs to be walking independently for at least 6 weeks before you buy shoes. In my experience it takes to me another 6 months to manage wellies.

DramaAlpaca · 03/12/2020 22:53

What @Ginfordinner said. She needs to be properly walking for around six weeks before getting shoes.

@thismeansnothing, write your phone number inside her shoes in case they get left behind.
TreaterAnita · 03/12/2020 22:56

Just one, and as @Ginfordinner says, wait until she’s been walking independently for at least a couple of weeks indoors first so she’s properly got her balance. Their feet grow so fast that she may go up a size before she’s ready to walk outdoors.

NannyR · 03/12/2020 22:57

I agree, one pair is fine. There's no rush to get them though, barefoot (or socks or soft leather bootees) is best until they've been walking confidently for a couple of weeks.

ForeverBubblegum · 03/12/2020 23:24

I'd stick with one. My DD's 16 months and was an early walker at 10 months. She's already in her 3rd shoe size. The ones she's grown out of are all still pristine as she doesn't actually walk outside that often, if we're going anywhere she's in either pushchair or car so the shoes are just for warmth. If we're not in a hurry I'll let her walk a bit, but don't if it's rainy, so she doesn't need wellies yet.

Parker231 · 03/12/2020 23:27

Only buy one pair at a time as they grow out of them so quickly. No need to buy any until they can walk properly outside.

Disappointedkoala · 03/12/2020 23:28

Stick with one - they grow quickly and at £30+ a go, it all adds up. Once DD was confident outside we got her some wellies as well but I think they do need to be properly walking to wear them as they are so stiff in the sole.

chuffinno · 03/12/2020 23:56

I wouldn't get her any yet if I'm honest. My DC is 13 months, walking for a few months and I'v not bothered yet as she isn't walking outside - very happy to sit in the pram still and it's very wet and muddy where I am too. I'v heard it's best not to rush them into shoes. When the time comes I'll get one pair.

PeacefulInTheDeep · 04/12/2020 01:09

I agree with PPs - give it a month or two and then just get one pair, as soft as possible. By the summer she'll be walking enough to get use out of sandals plus trainers, then get wellies in the autumn.

LittleLadysMama · 04/12/2020 10:20

Thanks, I thought that might be the case but just wondered what others had done, really helpful!
