Weaning in a flat with no dining area

Hi, my daughter will be 6 months in January so I’m starting to think about weaning. We live in a two bedroom flat. I’m just wondering what others did who live in flats or any good ideas really. Any high chair recommendations for limited space. Do we set up in the lounge or daughters room where there is space for a high chair. We have a narrow kitchen but a slim high chair might fit. We eat dinner on lap trays on sofa so would we be feeding her at this height while sitting down or do you normally feed standing up?! Just struggling to picture how this will work without a dinning table or big kitchen

I had to do this, until we rearranged to get a tiny drop leaf table in when he was a toddler. I had a mamas and papas pixi high chair - it folded up very small so I could stand it behind an open door when not in use, and was a good height for me to sit on the sofa and feed the baby.

It's many moons ago now but I had an old shower curtain to protect the floor and a low level chair like this when it came to weaning my children in a flat with no kitchen space for a table and no dining room.

I had the high chair in the lounge mostly as that’s where I ate my food so we both ate together and sometimes I’d move it into the kitchen so DD could eat while I cooked. I did mostly baby led weaning but when I started I used to sit her in a mamas and papas sit up chair that had a tray and sit on the floor to feed her. I used to give her snacks in that too so you might find it works better in a smaller flat.
You can fold most high chairs down so they don’t take up too much room or get one with a round base as they take up less room than a triangle base one.

I would get a small foldable dining table

  • I never had a high chair, just sat my baby with me at the table with one of those strap in booster seats that you use on a normal chair.

can you get a folding table - something like this?

lap trays on the sofa aren't good for your posture.

We used the IKEA Antilop high chair, and kept it in the living room. We also used, in the very early weaning days, a Bumboo seat on the floor and we sat with her.

We did a mix: the classic IKEA high chair in the kitchen doorway, which was forever hooked around the tiny flat because it was in the way everywhere; and floor picnics in the sitting room – which she LOVED and still likes to eat on the floor if given the chance. Or we’d sit her on our laps sometimes.

I don’t think you need a table, just a high chair with a tray. We have a Peg Perego one which folds up but there are probably even more compact ones out there. If you really want a table there are ones like this in Ikea
