Bad nappy rash

My 5 week old has had nappy rash for about 3 weeks now. Some days it's almost totally healed and then we have a bad day again. She's breastfed and still pooing constantly... at least 8 times a day. Some are tiny poos that I don't notice immediately it's happened but they still sit there are irritate the skin. I've tried sudocrem, bepanthen (which I usually swear by) and metamium yellow (which seemed to help at first but then make it much worse) and I'm doing nappy off time.
Going to ask the pharmacist today, but has anyone got other ideas.
Can't use the egg white trick as her older sister carries epi pens for egg allergy and we don't know her allergic status yet

The allergy thing is interesting, especially as metanium isn't working, I've never known it not to work before.

Do you think it might be an allergy?

ReefTeeth · 23/11/2020 08:36

I was coming on to say sudacreme but you've already tried that.

Hopeful bump then for you.

When dd was a baby the pharmacist recommended Conotrane and he was right, it's great stuff! It smells nice, protects and helps the rash to heal in just a couple of days.

Are you using wipes when you change her? My little girl had an allergy to any type we used, including water wipes. Made her really sore like extreme nappy rash. We had to use cotton wool and water until she was about 8 months old.

itshappened · 23/11/2020 08:46

Could it be a dairy allergy? That is a lot of dirty nappies. Maybe try a quick bath instead of wiping? Will be time consuming but should only take a few days before the rash starts to improve.

stopchewingeverything · 23/11/2020 08:49

Don't use wipes as the chemicals in them can irritate further. Cotton wool and water only. Put some breast milk on before any cream and let it dry. Allow baby to have some nappy free time lying them on a towel. Air helps it heal.

Ask your pharmacist for canesten nappy rash cream. Don't ask their advice. They won't suggest it

Same problem a few weeks ago, runny BM poo even crying would let a bit out.

Metanium.
Nappies changed regularly.
Back to Pampers.
Dab not wipe
Stopped the Infacol! Huge difference in nappies.

Good luck!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/11/2020 08:51

That's a good point about the wipes, I've heard of more than one baby with an allergy to them.

Are you putting anything in the bath too? Any Johnson's product gives every baby we've every had in the family dry itchy skin and horrible nappy rash.

Pipapple · 23/11/2020 08:53

We used wet flannels to wipe instead of baby wipes, it makes a huge huge difference.

SpamIAm · 23/11/2020 09:00

Going back to basics with water and cotton wool/flannel is a good idea. Unfortunately if poos aren't being changed relatively quickly then she's going to be sore - is there any regularity to the poos? Eg my kids pooed everytime they fed, so you could change or at least check after every feed if that's also the case for you.

Worth getting it checked out as well in case it's thrush.

Gunpowder · 23/11/2020 09:06

Yes I thought thrush too. Maybe you need anti-fungal nappy rash cream.

YukoandHiro · 23/11/2020 09:27

@JiltedJohnsJulie it's possible but I don't think necessarily so - my first child went undiagnosed for ages but had a huge number of symptoms (colic, rashy skin, mucous poo). There's nothing of that sort here. She's a very easy and content baby.

YukoandHiro · 23/11/2020 09:29

@itshappened possibly but I don't think so as the content of her nappies is very normal - nothing like my first who still has Cmpa and egg allergy at age 3. She just still goes with every feed which is normal for a bf baby. My first did it too I think (hard to remember as she had so many issues)

Thanks everyone - am seeing HV on Wednesday so will show her then to see if thrush cream needed.

Am still using water wipes. Will go for cotton wool and water

Sounds very much like what we experienced with our baby at that age. She's now 14 weeks. She had a bad rash that would improve a bit and then come back just as bad a day or so later. We tried everything you tried. In the end, it was thrush. The canesten cream cleared it up like a miracle!!
