Teacher laughing at my child’s result

My 13yo boy who had just got his result of 37% in his technology exam has told me that his technology teacher started laughing at his result and had got the whole class laughing. Should I tell the school about what the teacher did?

Yes

CuppaZa · 17/11/2020 21:08

Yes. I don’t know why teachers like that get in the profession

Wendyhaus · 17/11/2020 21:12

Some teachers can be incredibly cruel. Your post brings back memories for me which are still painful many years later. I agree it should be reported but do not hold out a lot of hope for support. Was your son's result the lowest in the group/class? Was he the only one picked out for ridicule? Whatever the answer it was uncalled for.

Yes. Im 35 and vividly remember when my French teacher humiliated me in front of the whole class when I was in Year 9. There were numerous other instances of her bullying pupils and nothing was ever done about it.

His other mate had gotten the same result as him but was called up separately.

That’s awful. I would definitely ask what happened.

Punxsutawney · 17/11/2020 21:38

Ds who has SEN once had a teacher make fun of him and encourage the whole class to laugh. He was in year 7 and pleaded with me not to report it. I didn't and regret it.

Teacher got sacked a couple of years later, turns out he was a nasty bully

FatBottomGirl99 · 17/11/2020 21:39

Of course you should complain and report it to the school. I would have done so straight away. How humiliating for him! Poor lad

JellyTots2009 · 17/11/2020 21:46

This struck me when reading. What an awful teacher. Defo report this. Hope she feels ashamed for what she did.

JellyTots2009 · 17/11/2020 21:47

Sorry I put she , I assumed

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 21:50

Wtaf that's horrific

Changechangychange · 17/11/2020 21:54

Tbh, that teacher should feel pretty ashamed that they have provided such shit teaching that multiple of their students can’t get more than 37% in a test. They’ve obviously completely failed to teach the subject. 37% isn’t “didn’t revise”, it’s “absolutely no understanding of this subject whatsoever”. And it is more than one person, so clearly the teacher is the problem, not the students.

So I’d be complaining on two fronts.

BefuddledPerson · 17/11/2020 22:00

Yes, would report that direct to the head teacher tbh, and would make it a formal complaint.

Tell your son from me that teacher is an absolute monster.

Wwydiywm · 17/11/2020 22:02

Talk to the teacher first, your child may have a skewed perception of what happened

ohbabyxox · 17/11/2020 22:04

Why are some adults like this? That's actual bullying! Please report to the school! People like that shouldn't be teaching they're meant to support and safeguard the children in their care, not encourage classmates to bully and laugh at them.

ShinyGreenElephant · 17/11/2020 22:21

Absolutely, thats disgusting. I worked with a teacher like that once, he was fucking awful, some people REALLY shouldn't be teachers. Hope your son is okay

Enough4me · 17/11/2020 22:26

Definitely.
Why not email the head and ask for written confirmation of their official assessment feedback policy/ethos, and if he/she believes it matches the experience your DS has had?
You can take it to the Governors and Ofsted if they don't acknowledge or try to fix this.

sparklewhynot · 17/11/2020 22:27

Yes. It's bullying. My maths teacher hated me, told me I would fail. When the results came, I got a C, meaning I wouldn't have to take maths support at college. I was so excited on results day I can remember saying to her "miss, I passed!". And she looked at me like dirt and said "by 3 marks. Remember that". I wish I'd have put her in her place at the time, but I was so embarrassed in front of my peers that I just walked off. No one should ever be made to feel small amongst their peers. I would certainly report it.

Wendyhaus · 17/11/2020 23:02

Two of my former female classmates went on to teach and years later they both, quite separately, told me that they were also bullied by other (male)staff members. One of these bullied teachers took many months off work with stress.
When the adults are bullying each other then the poor pupils don't stand much of a chance against bullies. Disgusting way to behave!!!!
I know this goes on in all kinds of workplaces, so not just having a go at the teaching profession.

Sittinbythesea · 17/11/2020 23:27

Change - you do know that some kids find things really, really challenging however hard they and the teacher work. That’s a pretty unsympathetic view you’ve got there. I’ve worked with kids who get single digit marks - and for them those few marks were hard earned and the result of effort and progress.
