Baby and muslin question

JKDcot · 14/11/2020 19:25

Looking for advice please
My 6 month old loves his muslin and often holds it and cuddles it. I know lullaby trust guidelines say nothing in his crib. But my husband wants to let him hold his muslin in bed. I’m worried he will chew it and choke on it or roll over and strangle himself.

Any thoughts? Am I being melodramatic or do you agree it’s too dangerous? He does chew a lot and would definitely chew it but isn’t rolling at night so the strangling is maybe a bit unrealistic

Thanks

Mine had one, didn’t do him any harm but I can’t guarantee the same for you. I would think the risk is small.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/11/2020 19:42

I wouldn’t offer it because babies that age and older can easily roll around and potentially strangle themselves with it.

Our 6 month old does the same and has for ages! They are cotton and breathable so as long as they are that kind of material I'm sure he will be fine! We used to really worry but she just snuggles into it. Do you have a camera monitor so you can check? We found that so helpful as you can see them breathing so less worry even with the Muslin. Hers is basically her comforter now and a sleep association

This infuriates me. The Lullaby Trust say nothing in the cot for a reason. Of course risk it if you feel your child's life is worth risking.

People smoke in pregnancy, don't use a cat seat etc and are fine and people will use the 'I did X and was fine' reasoning over and over. That doesn't make it any less of a risk. If something happened could you live with yourself for knowingly ignoring guidelines?

Disclaimer - my 7 month old baby died from SIDS

My DS love his muslin and I think it’d help him sleep but I’m not going to take the risk. They say nothing in the cot for a reason and I don’t feel it’s worth it just because he’d like it

I was in this position - DD has a favourite toy she finds really comforting, DH wanted to let her have it in her cot, we held off until she was one. She frequently moves so much at night that we have to chase her on the monitor.

Could you cut it down so it's small enough not to be able to wrap around him

DS had his from about 6 months but I removed it once he was settled in to a deep sleep, maybe that's worth a try

This. Could you just cut a small square that he can hold?
SleepWellBeast · 15/11/2020 09:27

@endofthelinefinally thank you. I remember your story too and hope you are doing ok

Littlescottiedog · 15/11/2020 09:34

Don't cut it up! A smaller piece could go in the mouth and he could suffocate or choke.

OP, your baby isn't rolling yet in the cot. Anything in there could be a hazard, either because he can't roll or because he learns how to without you realising.

Please don't put anything in the cot at night, even if you have a monitor. There will always be people who say "I did it and my child is fine" but there are guidelines for a reason. All you can do is do your best to prevent anything from happening.

So sorry for your loss, @SleepWellBeast Flowers

MoorGirl · 15/11/2020 14:53

Could you knot it?

JKDcot · 15/11/2020 19:56

Thank you for your advice. I’ll let him hold it to get to sleep and take it off him when he’s down. That’s a good idea so he has it for comfort

I thought about cutting a smaller square that he couldn’t wrap in but I’m worried about choking hazard too

I’m so sorry for your loss @SleepWellBeast I can’t imagine the pain
