Dirty Nappies

How do y'all store your dirty nappies? I've got 2 small nappy bins, each one holds about 1 day's worth. I'd like to get a pail or bag that holds 2-3 days and looks nice. Any suggestions?

I've got a reasonably sized, white plastic nappy pail from John Lewis that holds about 3 days worth.

How old is your dc? If very small, there will be fewer nappies as he/she gets older.

I doubt you would want 3 days worth of nappies hanging around and a bag would just get wet and smelly. Get 2 proper sized nappy bins from Mothercare.

i have a big bin thing with a lid that i line with a net to make it easier to get nappies to the wash hth.

We have a bag that hangs on the door and goes in the wash with them. We got it here - doesn't get wet or smelly, and because it is washed along with the nappies, doesn't have a 'residual smell'.

I also have this bag for using if we're away for a few days. It holds a couple of days worth and, as ts says, it doesn't smell as you just chuck it in the wash with the nappies. Because it's fleece and PUL it dries in no time.

three days!!!! i rarely do a nappy wash more than once a week [slattern]

I was having problems with overflowing nappy buckets and i hate the pul bags cos find they don't close properly, make the whole room smell and wick onto whatever surface you put them on (there are probably better ones out there but thats my experience). I got a addis smart bin-holds 3-4 days of nappies and the rotating lid bit means less smell escapes into room when you put a new nappy in. I got a big mesh bag from kleeneze which fits perfectly in it too.
Alternatively there are lots of big bins in places like poundland that would do the job, they just wouldn't look as nice!

Clairybee, I have 2 Cotton Bottoms PUL bags that close properly, but my Junior Joy one doesn't - so I know what you mean about the smell.

I actually have 3 standard size nappy buckets (as I currently have 2 in nappies) which hold about 2.5/3 days worth of nappies. I have been looking on Ebay at the extra large buckets that hold almost double the amount that mine do, then my DS' could have a bucket each

How many nappies do you wash at once if you're only washing once every 3+ days?

Do you rinse by hand before putting them in the nappy bin (to get the wee out)? I'd worry that leaving nappies for a week would start to rot them.

I've got a large capacity washing machine, but would only put 15 or so nappies in at once to ensure they all have space to move round during the wash.

Washersaurus · 17/10/2007 14:03

I have 8kg wash machine - I wash double the number of nappies that you do with no probs. I dry pail, no rinsing involved - wash at 60 deg with prewash.

moljam · 17/10/2007 14:06

mine came from a pound shop.its great, lid locks so no little nosey children in it.dh keeps trying to nick it

claireybee · 17/10/2007 15:08

I usually wash between 15 and 20 nappies, plus boosters, liners, wraps and wipes. I tend to leave a little more room in a nappy wash than i would a normal wash. I have a 6kg machine.

I don't rinse nappies at all, even pooey ones just go straight into bucket once the worst of it has plopped off. Apparently wee has something in it that stops mould etc forming, so you can leave them for quite a long time before any damage would be done.

I do a cold rinse first, then wash at 40 and they dont come out smelly!

I've got a big blue plastic bin with a lid that locks with white metal clips, so not as easy for dd to get in there, and it keeps the smell contained. I think we got it from Focus but any of the home /DIY stores have the same kind of thing. A standard nappy mesh (Nature Babies) fits perfectly. DD is only in nappies at night now so I'm only doing a nappy wash about once a week (and there's no poo in there, YAY!). But while she was in nappies full time, I just rinsed off as much poo as possible, slung everything in there and washed every 2-3 days. 40-60 degrees, with prewash (which I assume is cold).
