Dummy and breastfeeding

I have a two week old daughter and want to see if a dummy makes her a little more settled at night.
She is exclusively breastfed so I am worried that she might go off breastfeeding if she has a dummy.
Has anyone given a breastfed baby a dummy at such a young age and it has been OK?

I think we held out a bit longer but it's been fine - limited the comfort sucking a bit which helped me a lot! I think you'd have to be really mindful that you were still feeding regularly and wait until you're completely happy with the latch when feeding as its probably a different type of sucking?

I think the advice is not to introduce early as it can cause confusion, missed cues etc.

However I did introduce one pretty early on but I would always offer boob first and only in the evening when he gets upset. Now 14 weeks and still breastfeeding and he still has a dummy to settle him.

DC1 we held out till about 4 weeks I think. DC2 had a dummy on the ward. Both were EBF for 6 months with no issues.

I introduced a dummy at three days at midwife's advice. He rejected 'typical' dummies but has really taken to tommee tippee breast-like soothers. However, I had to use nipple shields for first four weeks or sov on one side because of inverted nipple so he already had to get used to different sucking techniques. He's six weeks now and doesn't need nipple shields at all - latches on breast, but also settled by the dummy when he doesn't actually want milk, he just wants to suck. He actually gets annoyed on the boob if milk is letting down and he's had enough food, so it's great to be able to comfort him with the dummy. Basically I would recommend using a dummy designed to mimic a nipple, if possible. Not sure how many brands make them.

I breastfed all four of my children, and 3 of them had a dummy. In my experience It didn't affect breastfeeding at all :)

I breastfed both of mine. The eldest took a dummy from birth and the youngest refused one despite my attempts!

I fed them both until they were nearly 3 so was fine.

In my experience it made no difference to breastfeeding (or sleep), but I didn’t push them to take it, I tried to put it back in a couple of times but if it kept falling out.

I breastfed my three and two of them also had a dummy from a young age (can't remember exactly when). I think if breastfeeding is going well with no issues it should be fine.

I've done this and no detrimental effect on breastfeeding

I introduced the dummy on the second day dc was born otherwise I didn't get any sleep, not even for an hour as dc wanted to constantly live on the boob. He was well fed on the boob and wasn't hungry, he just wanted something to suck on so I gave him the dummy and got 3 hours sleep on that night. He is nearly 20 months and still bf and now he hardly uses the dummy.

We did a dummy at 2 weeks.

My friends who waited the 'advised' 6 weeks never got them to take it.

Never had a problem, i think the dummy is a good teat for bottles as mo milk comes out so they will still feed from you

Thank you for all your replies! I have just ordered some dummies. Fingers crossed she will take them and will calm her down a little.
