Cloth bum idea- is it rubbish?

I'm just wondering at the moment if there is any scope for having someone who would buy reusablenappies off you, to clean, sanitise and restore to put on a online shop for people to rebuy at a reasonable price

I'm just thinking when I was new to cloth and spent a fortune on brand new that we ended up not liking, or spending a fortune on bundles from ebay which when they arrived weren't in a condition suitable for my baby.

I also wasn't in a position to afford some of the nappies I wanted to try, and I'd like to try and do some donations to refuges, food banks etc if possible.

When it has come to selling on, I've sometimes found it a nightmare to wrap, post and thats not even photographing and listing them on Facebook with all the rules and restrictions

I'd like to sell them on, but do it in an eco way, recyclable boxes, wrapped in sustainable tissue that sort of thing the little touches?

Any comments are more than welcome but I really am wondering if there would be must interest before I look at it, I have been up since 3am so it might be a really rubbish idea I am just so bored on maternity leave.

I think it's a great idea. I'm on my 3rd in cloth and have a stack of nappies I don't use. It would be great to pass them on without the FB faff and easily try different shapes. I've inserts and boosters coming out of my ears, mostly because it was cheaper to buy a bundle to experiment with than to just get other pockets/wraps. Some are out grown size 1, some are B2P that were just the wrong shape that I'm hoping will fit dd3. Some I just don't like or bought in bundles that looked good but elastics have gone, etc and I just don't have the time to fix them at the moment.
My biggest hate are my well loved totsbots easyfits that I use all the time but that suddenly leak all over... If you know a cure for that I'll love you forever!

Good idea. I'd like it if a company like that provided a cleaning service too so I could send mine off, have them restored and continue using them. I struggle with the ammonia smell quite often.

Emelene · 10/11/2020 07:46

Quite a good idea I think! Particularly if they were quality checked and had some mechanism for return etc. I too had trouble with Facebook marketplace and leaking second hand (totsbots). Is anyone else doing something similar? X

Wow thank you for the replies, I'd talked myself into it being a rubbish idea!

I did think of offering a professional clean idea too.

I just find when you have little ones it can be a faff listing and photographing them

I so far can't find anyone else doing it... and as I'll have 2 in cloth and not doing it so much for profit I can either use or donate ones I don't see selling

Brilliant idea. The professional clean part would reassure me if i was buying second hand

Emelene · 10/11/2020 07:57

I also think if you could repair Velcro or replace with poppers people would pay for this service too. Smile

4amWitchingHour · 10/11/2020 08:06

It sounds like it might slightly overlap with nappy libraries, but only a little. Think it's a great idea!

Dontthowthetoast · 10/11/2020 08:10

I didnt think of repair and replace and ive a very bored nana in lcokdown who would be more than happy to help, or even teach me to do it, shes done enough of mine already

@Emelene swapping Velcro for poppers is s brilliant idea, I'd pay for that service! I had to stop using some of my favourite best fitting ones as DD used to undo them overnight

ticktackted · 10/11/2020 08:58

Yes this is a fab idea. I got my entire starting stash from FB marketplace or borrowed, and would have used something like this if it had been available. New is just too expensive when you don't know what you'll use!

ISBN111 · 10/11/2020 09:01

I have a box of stuff and I can’t get anyone to take it off my hands for free! Nappy Library not interested even as a donation.

Seagullslanding · 10/11/2020 09:12

Have you thought of also offering the same with slings. I cloth bummed and used carriers/slings. I found it really difficult to work out which sling to get, and at first didnt realise that I would need to get different ones as my child got older. Good slings are expensive as well.

I would have got my nappies from you, I had a nightmare in the end as Facebook stopped me selling my nappies, Facebook dont like people selling used reusable nappies. So having a 'place' to resell them is a great idea.
Good luck.

I'm really surprised with all the responses, I'd almost talked myself out of it.

Where I go from here to actually get started I have no idea!

I think it’s a great idea and there would definitely be a market for it. I would totally use it to sell off my old nappies, and I would happily have bought off somebody who guaranteed decent quality/cleanliness.

The only think I would suggest you look at really carefully is what the profit margin would be - it sounds very time consuming work, and you would need to be buying off people at close to what they could sell on FB for, and selling at not much more than other people are selling. The difference between buying and selling costs might not be enough to cover your labour and make a profit.
