is 3 too young for a dolls' house?

because my mum just said she thought it might be

because i ordered, after some advice on another thread, a great one from Plan for dd's 3rd bday present. You access it from the sides as well as the back so it's not too fiddly, and dd is careful with her hands and enjoys acting out domestic scenarios with her big dolls, but if i've been a bit previous i can always hide it away for another year

or set it up in our bedroom and play with it myself

would really appreciate any advice on this

dd is just 3 and loves playing with them at friends' houses and playgroup.

marialuisa · 21/10/2004 13:14

Definitely not, DD has had hers since she was 2.5y and loves it. it gets involved in all sorts of other games too, e.g. is a hotel for her care bears. when she's had friends round they've all made a bee-line for it!

DD has a pintoys one and although DH has broken some of the furniture (!) it is easily fixed with wood glue.

Enid · 21/10/2004 13:20

I think we've got that one bp, or the pintoys one can't remember. we bought it for dd2 when she was about 20 months old and she loves it and if I play with her she acts out little scenarios for AGES. We havent bought all the furniture for it as tbh the only things that interest her (she's 2 now) is making the little people go up and down the stairs, and having a bath, or going to bed or out in the car.

The only thing I would say is that she finds it hard to play with the bottom storey, it needs to be up high to get full play value, we have it on a solid bench about 30cm off the ground, makes it easier to access.

IKEA do a nicy 'chunky' one, not too fiddly and you can buy a room at a time.

Enid · 21/10/2004 13:21

also just to say that my dd1 got one for her 2nd birthday and couldnt have been less interested in it, so I guess it depends on your dd! She's nearly 5 now and just uses the attic to store her jewellery

Skate · 21/10/2004 13:22

Not at all in my opinion - my ds's love the dolls house at playgroups and friends houses and they are 3 and 2. Actually been thinking of getting them one too - a plainish wooden one that's not too girly but they do love it!!!

Skate · 21/10/2004 13:22

hmb - how much is the IKEA one? Might be good for my ds's.

bakedpotato · 21/10/2004 13:27

well, all of this is a relief. enid, your dd1 sounds like My Naughty Little Sister, in the story when the dolls' house gets used as an oven/train furnace

No, definitely not too young, in fact probably the perfect age. My 2.5 year old has just started using her imagination and acting out scenarios with dolls etc. In fact I may just buy her a doll house for Xmas this year.

Enid · 21/10/2004 13:33

bp lol, yes and she 'traps' dd2's toys in there and does their voices 'Help help' until dd2 is in floods, poor lamb

hmb · 21/10/2004 13:34

I think (and it is only think) £8 for 2 rooms and then the stuff to go into it is 5-10 for a rooms worth??

hmb · 21/10/2004 13:36

Sorry,

www.ikea.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=7&langId=-20&catalogId=10101&productId=47406

£12 is for 3 rooms worth of furnature so not as cheep as I thought.

MumtoLaura · 21/10/2004 13:36

I agree, just the right age I think. My mum has just bought one today for my DD's third birthday in December. I think she'll love it.

Skate · 21/10/2004 13:36

Thanks hmb!

fiorocious · 21/10/2004 13:45

3 is a perfect age. My daughter still likes hers now.

Arabica · 21/10/2004 14:09

I would definitely say 3 is a great age for a dolls' house. DS loves playing with the IKEA one at his childminders'

Your lucky dd - she'll be thrilled on Christmas day

harrassedmum · 22/10/2004 23:36

She'll love it, my dd has 2, one quite chunky small 1 and a great big thing with loads of fiddly bits that was handed down from my sister and she loves it, plays with it for hours!

ChicPea · 23/10/2004 00:07

I bought a Fisher Price one for DD age 2 and she loves it. There are all sorts of sound effects, like the loo when you put loo seat down, washing machine when you press it, father's computer makes a logging in sound, and types away and baby coos in bed. DD loves it and DS age 1 is starting to take an interest.
