Kidney reflux baby.. Help/advice

Hi Ladies,
So my gorgeous little boys is 9 weeks and he has been through the mill... He had a uti at 2 weeks investigations long story short he was given anti biotics at 4 weeks to keep on a maintaing dose until all tests done. Ultrasound came back all clear on the bladder. Yesterday he had a catheter fitted and dye put into bladder to see if there was any urine going into the kidneys. So results today... Yes there is some kidney reflux either category 1 or 2 which isn't severe. So I have been told he now has to be on anti biotics until he is 4.

Has anyone been through any of this that can offer advice on over use of anti biotics or outcomes and what can I do? Feel so sorry for my bubba 😔

Thanks in advance ladies

Ashleigh

Hi OP, sorry you’re going through a tough time Flowers

I don’t have any advice from a parenting point of view, but just wanted to say I had this (or a similar) problem as a child (diagnosed aged 3ish). I had a kinky(!) ureter which was causing reflux. I ended up having surgery and was on antibiotics for a few years but I’m absolutely fine. I’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of what’s causing it and they can do so much. My surgery was big but it’s all keyhole now and such a doddle by comparison. Maybe ask or investigate how you can help protect your baby’s microbiome against the antibiotics? Not sure what the deal is with babies and gut flora.... best of luck and don’t despair! xx

My DD had this but wasn't diagnosed until she became septic at 2yo with a kidney infection. By then fairly extensive damage had already happened to the kidney and she ended up with surgery to remove part of it when she was 3yo. So sorry to hear your LO has it. Some children grow out of it with no need for surgery. DD's ended up fairly major as she hadn't been on prophylactic ABs and therefore had had lots of infections which had damaged the kidney. If your LO stays well, hopefully they should avoid surgery.

That must’ve been a shock for you OP. I agree with a previous poster as regards gut microbiome, I’d buy some probiotics if it were me, and ask the Consultant what they think about probiotics at the next appointment.

Hi OP, I also had something similar and required surgery to correct the issue at 18 months old.

My scar never bothered me and was practically invisible (in fact has now been covered by my c section scar!)

My kidneys still have a little reflux, but scans and blood tests have shown they are functioning perfectly well. I don’t have regular UTIs and my life is completely unaffected. I’m not even scared of hospitals/needles etc as you may worry about in a child that’s had a lot of interventions - I’m a doctor myself now!

The only long lasting damage is my absolute hatred of banana flavoured things after years of trimethoprim boak

Another here who had kidney reflux in childhood. No surgery, but I was in and out of GOSH a few times before I started school. And loads of 'banana medicine' - which I quite liked, and I remember weeping when I was 5 or 6 and it was changed to little pills I had to swallow.

AFAIK I have had no lasting damage. There has never been any reason to investigate my kidneys since then, as my blood pressure has always been healthy. I do have some mild allergies, but whether that is anything to do with all the antibiotics I gulped down in my first 7 or so years... who knows. I am generally reasonably healthy, and always have been.

It's horrid when your dc are ill, especially when they're so tiny. I'm sure the treatment now is even better than 40-45y ago. Hope your little boy recovers quickly, and the prophylactic abs keep him well as his body matures. ((Hugs))
