newborn EBF - when will she poo less!?

I have a 4 week old that poos runny poo ALL THE TIME!! I normally wouldn't stress about it but she's had a horrid nappy rash for the last 2 weeks that just won't clear up as she keeps pooping all the time! I can't keep up with constantly changing her. Sometimes it takes me 30 mins to change a nappy because I'll clean her up and she'll poo again, clean her up poo again etc etc

Will her poo frequency go down? I'm honestly tempted to switch her to formula if it means she doesn't poo so much and her bum can heal as she's in so much distress over it

Around 6 weeks it should settle down, and from there it might be several days between poos. Have you tried metanium (sp?) cream? Could also be something in the nappy she’s reacting too?

TooMinty · 05/11/2020 11:38

Be careful what you wish for! Both my EBF babies started out pooing during/after every feed. But at some point they switched to once a week - and it was a horrific poonami that usually led to clothing being thrown out and a bath being required...

I just had a little chuckle toominty
The memories of what the hell do I do, where do i start 🤯

It will settle down soon, give it a bit more time. You can try different creams, a high proportion of zinc helps.
Check on-line pictures to make sure it’s not fungal nappy rash, you’ll need a different cream for that.
My bf babies settled down to once or twice a day, and the smell of bf poo is much better than formula, think before you change!

For mine it was 8 weeks with one and 10 weeks with the other. Then they went down to about 2 poos a week until weaning. Maybe try another brand of nappies or wipes, and make sure you use cream every change. I found metanium the best for bad rashes, sodium for if it's just a bit pink and coconut oil as a barrier cream if there's no rash.

addictedtotheflats · 05/11/2020 11:46

About 6 weeks I think. From 3-6 months mine went every 10-17 days it's was heaven. Then weaning started 🙈

ForeverBubblegum · 05/11/2020 11:46

Sudocrem not sodium

It is a fungal nappy rash we got given a steroid cream for it yesterday but I'm supposed to leave it on for 15 minutes before adding a thin layer of metanium over the top before putting a nappy one

But she will dribble poo like 5 times in that 15 minute space! I'm constantly cleaning her and therefore not allowing her steroid cream to sink into the skin

Haha honestly I would take the poonami if it meant it gave her bum a chance to heal. She's in pain whenever she poos and screams bloody murder when she has her nappy changed. It's such an ordeal. Poor thing! Sad

Poor wee soul. Try to give her some nappy off time (on an old sheet or towel) to get some air in.

But my youngest is 6 and I still shudder at the thought of those weekly poos...

They always happened when we were just about to leave the house so pram, snowsuit and clothes were all at risk!

Superscientist · 05/11/2020 13:14

At about 7 weeks we went from 10 poo nappies (plus more mid change!) to 5 poo nappies and rarely going mid change. She is now 12 weeks and goes 0-3 times a day but they now fill the nappy. We are using cloth nappies which are much better for containment - the only poo driven clothes change we have had was in a disposable.

My EBF baby was exactly the same. She was 5 weeks early and it seemed to go on forever. Tried so many creams and eventually found a product called ilex paste which cleared the rash, as nothing else would stick because her bottom was literally always wet from the constant pooing. So stressful at the time!
At six months now she poos a couple times a day. From memory she began to poo less around 14 weeks so if you adjust that would be 9 weeks for a term baby. I also cut out dairy so not sure whether that helped, I have dairy now and she is still breastfed.
Good luck it’s rubbish but it will ease! Thinking of you.

@MoorGirl thanks for sharing your experience it's reassuring to know others have gone through the same! Was the ilex paste given/recommended to you by the docs? They keep saying the best thing it metanium which I'm I'm sure is very good but like you because she poos so much her bum is always wet! So the metanium never stays despite me applying a thing layer only

@SassyPants87 I found it mentioned on Mumsnet threads so googled it, if you email the company they’ll send you a free sample which goes a long way. Lots of info on their site, it’s marketed as a nappy rash cream. You put Vaseline over the top of it.
