Nappy changing a toddler

How do you deal with changing an uncooperative toddler who isn't yet dry. Do you try to negotiate or just get on with it and not get into any arguments?

At the moment I'm finding it a pain getting my LO to keep still and every change becomes a battle :-(

I find nappy pants and standing is much easier. Only bother with a lie down battle for soiled nappies and then find a book usually distracts.

Not ideal, but when DS was this age I put some kids apps on my phone to keep him distracted.

Distraction!

DD went through a stage for a couple of weeks of really fighting us whilst having a nappy change. We found if you distracted her with a small toy or made sure a cartoon was on it really helped. This phase has passed now!

Distraction! Usually a toy or sing a few songs. I'm sure you do but have everything to hand before you start, nappy bag open, wipes out of the pack, new nappy unfolded

SocialBees · 05/11/2020 10:59

Standing up changes! Then they can carry on with whatever they’re doing while you whip off the nappy and replace.

Yea standing up changes are easier and we did that when using pullups but they just aren't absorbent enough so it's now back to proper nappies.

I guess I'm not the only mum trying to nappy change a 3yo octopus though ;-)

If your kid is starting to argue about nappy changes, rather than just wriggling, it's probably time to think about big kid underwear.

Aahh99 · 05/11/2020 20:36

DS is just. Over 2. He went through this phase to, would. Scream. And tantrum while. Nappy change.
He doesn't do it anymore, actually Lies down and says bum. Bum and gets a nappy now.
Distraction singing, giving a toy, putting YouTube on.
Soon passes.

2.5yo octopus here. We’ve been using pull ups since 12-13 months I think for this reason. In nursery they use the other style apparently he loves being change Hmm

Firefly2929 · 05/11/2020 20:49

Nappy pants all the way - can’t you change them more often if they aren’t absorbent enough during the day? My 2 and a half year old is dry during the day but wears nappy pants at night and I do agree over night sometimes they aren’t that great!

Firefly2929 · 05/11/2020 20:51

But yeah we knew that when dc didn’t want happy changes it was time to go cold turkey during the day. Been try for a few months now during the day but strangely had a week or so of wanting to be a ‘baby’ again and demanding nappies!!

Kokosrieksts · 07/11/2020 08:29

What are you on about? Nappy pants are just as absorbent as normal nappies. Try Pampers premium protection, never had any issues.
I’ve been using nappy pants and vertical changes as soon as she was able to stand confidently. Just very quick changes and job done.

I wouldn't class a 3 year old as a toddler really.

Personally I would be instead doubling down on efforts to potty train, if they are old enough that you have to negotiate a nappy change with them they are old enough to learn to use a potty/toilet.
