Cot or cotbed?

How old was you LO when they moved on from a cot?

Did you buy a cot or cotbed?

We use a cot for space limitations at the time we bought it but now wish I'd bought a cotbed :-(

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for cot bed recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best cot beds page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

Cot bed, she went in at 6 months, she’s nearly two and I’m going to change into bed soon. X

We had a cot bed, took sides off when DC was around 2 but have just moved them into a proper size single bed at 2.5 years

Cot bed. DS1 is 4 and only just in a proper single this year when he had a massive growth spurt in the summer.

Moved from a cot to a single bed when they were three. Never had a cotbed.

We had a cot bed but only used it with the side off for about a week before we brought a bed. DD was 2.5.

Woodentopper · 04/11/2020 08:42

When did you remove the sides?

I'm a believer in keeping the sides on as long as the child can't climb over but some of my friends like the sides down as soon as possible.

Cotbed is better value for money, if you have the space. Both of mine moved into the cotbed set up as a bed (with no sides) between 18 months to 2.5 years. Basically, when it stopped working and it was easier to be in a bed, we switched it over.

We got a cot bed and took the side off when DS was 2. Baby due soon now he’s 2.5 and will need the cot by the time he’s about 3 so will get him a single bed at 3 and move the baby into the cot.

DD1 ‘slept’ in a cot bed from 3 to 6 months and DD2 has never been in one. DD1 moved into her own big girl bed before she was 2.

We had cots for Dts for space reasons, they were in them until 2.5, then toddler beds and then finally bunks at 5. They were tiny though so the toddler beds lasted ages.

Yea we bought a cot for space reasons and still use it but I guess we should have tried to accomodate a cotbed.

Luckily my LO doesn't climb over the sides so he's still in the cot with the sides up and I'd like to keep using it as long as possible until we buy a bed.

My DS was in a cotbed with the sides up until just before his 2nd birthday. He moved rooms and went into a single with bed guard to make the cot available for baby DD.

skankingpiglet · 05/11/2020 07:46

We used a cotbed. Bars were on until 16 (DC1) and 14 (DC2) months, then moved to a single bed at some point between 2 and 2.5yrs.

SnuggyBuggy · 05/11/2020 08:27

Mine wouldn't sleep in it until we took a side down so I'm glad I picked a cot bed.

SpamIAm · 05/11/2020 08:40

We just bought a cot. It was only £25 so so much cheaper than a cot bed that it really didn't seem worth paying the extra for a cot bed. DD was in it until just after 2, when we took the side off, and then moved her into an IKEA toddler bed (160cm long i think, so bigger than a cot bed, and she's only dwti so we'll get a good 5 years out of it between the two of them.

She could happily have stayed in the cot longer, I just wanted it free for DS (if he'd let me know in advance he was never going to sleep in it then I wouldn't have bothered...).

I totally agree with you re keeping them in the cot for as long as it's safe, which if they're not a climber will be a good while.

MeadowHay · 05/11/2020 11:38

She's been in a cotbed since she was about 7 months when she outgrew the Bednest. She's 2.5 and still in it.

dementedpixie · 05/11/2020 11:41

Cot then single bed - dd moved age 2 and ds was 2½ years
