Baby corns - ok for weaning?

Is it ok to give DS (six months) some baby corns as finger food, or could the tiny grains be a choking hazard? Thanks.

I'd probably wait a couple months. I panicked with them when I tried them before 8 months. But then my DS like shove things in his mouth whole!

newmum234 · 03/11/2020 11:39

Ok thanks. I will eat them myself instead!

Mine had them from a few weeks after we started weaning. Just cooked till soft. Did find a chunk of it in her nappy though 🤢

The tiny grains wouldn't be a choking hazard. But for the very first foods I'd be giving stuff with less bite, like soft carrot sticks etc.

They say olives, grapes, cocktail sausages, cherry tomato are choking hazards - anything round with that kind of diameter I'd give a miss. You could slice them lengthways and it would be ok, I should think.

By the way, it's handy to read the difference between gagging and choking - babies gag a fair bit (sounds like retching, helps to move food around in their mouths). If they're choking, they don't make a noise. With gagging, the food hasn't gone down their windpipe, it's just too far back in their mouths - baby gag reflexes extend further down the tongue than adults so they gag more easily. Sounds horrible but it's not that bad!

They're absolutely fine. The grains aren't a choking hazard. I cut lengthways though because I think they're probably about the diameter of their windpipe?

Thanks - but unfortunately I’ve eaten them all myself now! Grin I will know for next time.

Cut lengthways and cut til soft and they're fine.

The tiny grains are too small to cause a problem and I honestly wouldn't have expected DS to chew enough to separate them anyway for quite some time

Harrysmummy246 · 03/11/2020 17:24

cook til soft. Sorry.

It’s safer for her to take a bite straight from the cob (or gum that) rather than give individual grains. Just boil or pressure cook corn on the cob and serve.
