Experiences with older children giving up dummies

So I'm looking for experiences with getting your older kids off the dummy. DS is 5 and still uses a dummy at bedtime, I've put off taking it away for so long because his sleep has always been terrible. I've never had an issue with him having it as it's never caused any problems, (his teeth aren't affected,) but I feel he's now really too old for it. He's quite attached to it, so it's not going to be easy. If anyone's been through this with a child of a similar age I'd love to hear your tips.

Tell him dummies are for babies and take them away. He's probably too old for the dummy fairy now, so you're going to need to just be honest and up front with him. You could go for a special toy as a reward, but tbh I'd be tempted not to bother with bribery. Make sure his bedtime routine is soothing and solid, and then tell him it's time for them to go. Bin or cut them so you can't cave.

There isn't really a gentle way to do it at this age unfortunately, as the habit is firmly entrenched and he's not likely to forget after a few days.

that evening a gift box arrives from the baby - thanking for the dummy and has a toy/teddy/blanket whatever you want to try replace the comfort with. the expert said it still will be tough but you have something to frame it on. a baby has the dummy and you have .....
