When to duvet?

My grandson has a (thin) fleece blanket and a baby quilt i pop over him once he's wrapped himself round that one.

He's a warm child so I'm finding it hard to know if he's getting cold? I've bought him a duvet but I'm honestly scared to use it, are they a big risk for toddlers? He's a good sized 22 month old

Advice appreciated (I don't have central heating but the storage heaters downstairs keep us quite toasty)

My 2.5 year old has a 1 tog duvet currently (has done for a good few months) and still ends up out from under it by time morning comes. I think I remember advice being after a year it's okay but don't quote me on that

Sleeping bag? DS had them til he was nearly 3, they stopped him climbing out the cot!

I second a thermometer in the room and sleeping bags that suit the overnight temps. DD is 2.5 and been in sleeping bags overnight since she was 3 months old.

Yes he's in a sleeping bag now, has been since he's been with me (10 months old) but he's started arguing about it, which is annoying because they're perfect

@MeadowHay what should his room temperature be? I'll get a thermometer but knowing me I'll be up every hour checking it, no rest for a Nanna lol

4.5tog duvet is ok from age 1

Rubyroost · 30/10/2020 21:59

A bit 🤔 about taking the temp of the room. Surely it's a bit overkill and you ca tell if your child is too hot or cold. We used sleeping bags and then when he moved I to a bed at 2. 5 got him a duvet. If he's too hot he sleeps outside the duvet, so he chooses how warm he wants to be. With the sleeping bag, I just selected the tog on terms of how warm his room felt. He always slept and never complained-- no room thermometer

I think from 1 year and 4 tog only is fine. A toddler size one in 4 tog shouldn’t be too thick or heavy, and at 22 months he’s almost 2. You will know whether you think he is ready or not as you have most experience with him.
If he’s still cold then probably an extra layer of clothing is better than extra blankets at this stage.

Room should be between 16-20 ideally.

My dd has one from age 12 months as she hated sleeping bags.

This winter I’ve bought fleece pjs lots on sale now to keep her cosy. So if she kicks sleeping bag off she’s got fleece pls slipper socks and vest. Though she knows how to cover herself and has for awhile.

screamsonbread · 31/10/2020 07:28

My DS has had a 4 tog quilt for the past 4 months. We moved from sleeping bags to a quilt a month before he turned 2 as every night became a battle to get the bag on. He’s been absolutely fine with the quilt, most nights it gets kicked off but he’s never cold when we go into his room either to check on him before we go to bed or in the morning. He’s also never too hot which I was worried about at first. Short pjs in the summer and then long pjs with a vest as it’s got colder have kept him at the right temperature.

Mumdiva99 · 31/10/2020 07:32

He will be fine with a duvet. (Not too warm a duvet though).

Our house was cold at night - still is. If the child sleeps through then they are fine.

Primark do lovely cheap fluffy fleece pyjamas which are great for keeping kids warm. Add some socks. We also had fleece all in one PJs. But....if your little one is sleeping OK then don't worry.

I'm not a fan of thermometer in the room once they are past baby stage. Especially if it makes you anxious. (As my grandmother used to ssy....she bought up 4 healthy kids with no central heating and none of these gadgets....).

Thank you everyone, I'm reassured that at his age he's past the "duvet danger" stage I've got a 4 tog toddler duvet I'll be trying tonight

I think he'll be fine with a duvet - you might be up a few times in the night to cover him over though! My DD is a hot bod and always sleeps with the covers off!

Have a look at slumbersac you can get sleeping bags with legs much better for toddlers my 2 year old sleeps in his every night we have a light for bed duvet from dunelm but he kicks all covers off so the slumbersac keeps him warm. They even do adult ones! I’m tempted Grin

😳 At all the very warm pj posts. Our little one sleeps in his pull ups. He seems happy enough! 🤔
