Babies bum is seriously red and sore.... we have been applying metanium for 24 hours but as it goes on so thin I was wondering if we should put sudoxxeme on top?

Well it wouldn't hurt. May not make any difference but you won't know until you try.

wimbler · 30/10/2020 17:01

is it the yellow metatanium you are using? When nappy rash is really bad I put bepanthen on over the top so the nappy rubs that off but not the metatanium. Personally I find sudocrem useless but i'm sure it will do the same job.

unmarkedbythat · 30/10/2020 17:03

Sudocrem can really sting if the skin is sore, so personally I wouldn't. Can you ask your HV team for advice?

Try Drapolene instead

doireallyneedaname · 30/10/2020 20:38

It’s meant to be thin. Metanium is a miracle. Honestly if that doesn’t clear it up I’d be speaking to the docs.

PolarBearStrength · 30/10/2020 20:43

Thick layers of cream can actually make nappy rash worse. You end up blocking the absorbent layer in the nappy so baby’s skin is in direct contact with urine for longer.

yellowbluetulip · 30/10/2020 20:45

Also find sudocrem useless. Bepanthen is an great barrier and very gentle.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 30/10/2020 20:47

Second vote for Bepanthan. You might need to get this initial redness under control with Metanium, however as an every day barrier cream, Bepanthan is wonderful. Far better than Sudocreme.

schitter · 30/10/2020 20:49

3rd vote for Bepanthen, it's all I used when mine were small.

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 30/10/2020 20:50

That's how I always did it on GP's advice. Thin layer of yellow metanium. Let it dry thoroughly then apply a thin layer of sudocrem on top as a barrier. I never tried Bepanthan but I'm sure that works equally well or better. The point is that the metanium treats the rash and the other cream prevents any more urine from reaching it and making it worse.

MotherFeeder · 30/10/2020 20:56

The yellow metanium worked a dream for our worst periods of nappy rash. Saying this, i know others who relied on Sudocream or Bepanthan. Try a couple to see what works. You'll know quickly.

Failing that see your gp

Duckchick · 30/10/2020 20:57

If it's not improving with metanium in 24 hours I'd see a GP. They can also get a funghal nappy rash infection, and then you need an antifungal cream (we were prescribed daktarin cream which you can buy over the counter but I'd get someone to check the rash before buying it).

hedgehogger1 · 30/10/2020 20:58

I was about to write if metanium isn't cutting it I'd see GP. Might need anti fungal cream

Yes, this!
justanothersugar · 30/10/2020 21:10

Nappy free time also helps!

Rubyroost · 30/10/2020 22:09

The yellow metanium did nothing for us and my newborn had nappy rash for first 4 months after he was born he was ebf and poohing constantly and had a nasty contact rash. I was whopping his nappy off as fast as I could but tmthe rash was still terrible. Bepanthen worked for us the metanium I found useless. I think whaf works is different for all. The heat thing you can do is have nappy off time. 30 mins every nappy change if poss, but even 5/10mins helps and then perhaps a bit longer for some other changes?

Rubyroost · 30/10/2020 22:09

Best not heat!

NiceGerbil · 30/10/2020 22:17

DD2 had ezcema and would get a really sore bum really fast including sore your things

All we found helped was

Change nappy asap and pdq
Wash in bath often/ with water (not just wipes)
Leave bum to air as much as poss- don't put straight back into nappy after bath for eg
Metanium is awesome but as PPs say needs to be a thin layer

When she was bad I'd be dunking her bum in the bath to wash 2 or 3 or 4 times a day.

Then air dry and spot of metanium

And she'd be right as rain in no time (until the next time!).

wimbler · 31/10/2020 09:45

Also worth saying not sure what wipes you are using but it took me longer than it should have done to realise that my daughter was allergic to water wipes. Made the switch to cheeky wipes and never had a reaction problem since. I do use the huggies extra care wipes too and she seems find with them but only if I don't use them for extended periods of time. I also pat dry with a muslin. Perhaps use cotton wool and water along with the cream until it clears up?
